As far back as the Greeks ,Persian Empire and the Romans new they had to control the seas to keep shipping lanes open for trade . Needless to say the Germans and Japs of WW2 had superior Navies than England and the U.S. Had the japs took out our A/c carriers ,that weren't in Pearl , we would have been done .

Why would they attack the Navy of one of their largest customers (17.7% of their export went to the US in 2010, vs. only 7.2% of their import coming from the US to them. Citation: http://www.economywatch.com/world_economy/china/export-import.html )?

They want to become an even stronger economic powerhouse and we keep giving them business. It would be like one of the vendors on this site threatening us users/buyers. Makes no sense. We also don't have any context for his statements, which is typical of most news agencies desperate for a story. Take something that is, by itself, inflammatory and spam it to their audience.
