Never been questioned like, "Is that gun legal and where are your papers?", more like in the line of "Are you a LEO?" or "Is that FA?" (Ha, I wish!) :) Copies of NFA paperwork is always in the range bag with additional copies in the gun cases.

Copy of fed and state papers in drag bag for rifle, and another copy in jacket (when in the field without drag bag). I like the idea about 1/4 size laminated copies a lot. Never checked by LE, but had a couple of older shooters at Hunters Run make snide comments about my rig being only good for "killing people". Some people never get it.

I keep color copies of my Form 4 scattered everywhere. There's always one in my car, computer room, bedroom, pistol case, rifle case, range bag, and anywhere else my can may be.
The original is in the safe deposit box.
