prepping nad changing stock on Suomi M31

I bought a Suomi M31 this past christmas from an online dealer. It showed up and part of the stock is burnt and cracked. It definitely looks like a battlefield pickup. I just got a new stock from Ebay. It turns out this stock is unfinished. Id like to finish it, but I've never stained a stock before. Any suggestions? Also, it has a few marks from where holes where plugged. Do i just deal with it or is there a way to make them look better? Lastly, I'd like to fix the old stock. Any tips on stripping it and restoring it would be appreciated.
