I wanted to share some photos and info on my successful primitive weapon hunt in Natchitoches Parish this past week. I use a T/C Contender Carbine chambered in 35 Remington. The load is a Hornady 180 SSP atop a charge of H4895. Opening day I passed up a shot on a spike that looked to weigh about 90 pounds......just too early in the season in my opinion. It turns out it was a good decision. Back on the same stand that afternoon, out stepped this............
18.5" outside spread----5" G1's and 6" G2's----------180 pound live weight
The shot was at about 100 yards and the deer ran maybe 90 yards before collapsing. The shot was broadside and took out both lungs.
As the week progressed, I passed up several other shots at does and small bucks. Then Thursday afternoon I hunted a new stand for the first time overlooking a food plot. At 5:00 PM out stepped a medium size doe. She was alone with no fawns and I started to consider filling another tag. She was at about 150 yards and feeding towards me so I watched her for a while as I further considered taking the shot. after about three minutes, out steps another nice buck. I quickly decided the doe could continue on and took the shot at the buck at 125 yards. Boom. flop.
15.25" outside spread------6" G2's------------175 pound live weight
