I have a Remington model 550C, Winchester 94, Browning BL22 and Savage G93. I'm intersted in refinishing the stocks with an oil type finish. These rifles are not collectables and are used on a regular basis.

    Thanks,

    Greg

Take all metal out of stock. Scrub it down with Formbys Finish restorer. Apply stain to even out color desired. Wipe down with 2-3 coat of BLO lightly wet sanding between all but last coat.

Project Doug's Garand started today. I removed the main stock and started using a heat gun to get the cosmo out of the wood. If the Garand comes out nice I have a K98 that needs some lovin' too.

and yes LSP's Garand turned out very nice but his stock wasn't original. :)

Tung oil is the way to go. Just refinished the stock on my 10/22. Just be aware that the wood will darken some compared to a clear varnish finish.

I like tung oil myself, it's time consuming but can give a great looking finish.

to get old BLO out nothing I've tried works better than purple power and water. Hang it up and repeated soakings with purple power and then the water hose.

This could cause the stock to warp but I've done 3-4 w/o issue just give it a light sanding after it dries since water makes the "hair" stand up on it and make sure its been drying a week or two before applying the tung oil.
