Being that it is supposed to crest at 47.5ft on 5/21, and the lowest part of the leeve in downtown baton rouge is 47.3ft...... yep, it ain't going to be pretty.

What would that do? How does it work?

Since a major flood on the Mississippi River has the potential to overtop levees in New Orleans, a series of relief valves have been installed on the river channel upstream of the Big Easy to allow flood waters to have an alternate route away from the river. By allowing water to pass out of the Mississippi into other waterways, the peak of the flood will be reduced, thus reducing the strain on the New Orleans flood control system.

The Bonnet Carre will be opened, although the design capacity is much less than the Morganza Floodway. They won't open the Morganza Floodway unless they feel it is a last resort due to the flooding of farms and homes that would result. It has only been opened once since it's completion in the early 40's, in 1973 I believe.

The Bonnet Carre is like a huge temporary douche for Lake Pontchartrain too! Good bye speckled trout, shrimp, and crabs, hello algae bloom!

It's going to be ugly at first, but it comes back nicely. Ain't nature great?

This has the potential to be a very big event!

The recent excessive rains in the Ohio Valley are not even figured (mathematically), into the mix yet?!?

    Yikes!

Got a text that says they're going to temporarily open the new bridge in St. Francisville Saturday because the water is too high for the ferry.....
