I'm trying to get my younger brother a cool birthday present this year. It's going to be the last time I see him in about three years because the Marines have decided he's needed in Japan.

He's an avid fan of rap music, and like every other fan of rap music, he likes to rap. He's actually pretty good lyrically, and he's got a few recordings he's made in his closet. He's obviously good at mixing, too, because they don't sound like they were recorded in a closet. :mamoru: No matter what, I support a hobby that isn't getting him in trouble.

So I think he'd really enjoy some time in a professional studio that actually has a sound engineer to mix for him. He's currently stationed around Gulfport (which is nice since our family is from Slidell). I found this place in New Orleans. http://www.audiophilestudios.com/index.html It seems cool, and the rates aren't too bad. It says it's $350 for a full day, and I'm prepared to pay that if he thinks he'd use all the time wisely.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or experience with any recording studios in the area? I'd really like to give him something memorable since it's going to be a long time not seeing him, and I think this is something he can always have and be proud of.

That's a cool gift man. I have a few friends with studios down in New Orleans/Kenner area. I'll ask around.

Another thing to think about is getting him a digital recorder (if he doesn't already have one) that he can take with him to Japan. Something that he can record ideas and mix down in his room.

    Thanks for looking around!

I think he might have something like that. I know one of the reasons his closet recordings sound nice is because he has a high quality microphone already.

That's a cool idea too. I don't know **** about music gear, but I know my brother has some cool little mixers and digital recording equipment that you could practically record an album on.
