I own a Rem 700BDL in .17Rem but don't really use it. Another forum member has a 700 barrel in .270 for $50. I was thinking about buying it and having a smith change it out for me. Will this work with little effort? About how much would a competent smith charge for re-barrelling? Is this a good idea or would you advise against it?

    Thanks

A bigger problem than the bolt face is the fact that the .17 is built on a short action and the .270 requires a long action.

Your best bet would be to check for a .270 here or at a pawn shop. I bought a Remington 700 .270 with Bushnell scope and sling at a pawn shop in Walker,la about a year ago for $225 walk out the door cause it looked like a six year old painted it with Krylon. I liked that even more because I finally had a good reason to try a DIY camo paint job without worrying about ruining an expensive rifle. Forget about converting your rifle...it would be cheaper and more practical to just buy a .270.
