That's a decent price on the VX-2. I have changed my thoughts on glass over the years, my first quality scope was a Vari-x III 2.5-10x50 with the heavy duplex reticle. Great scope mounted on a Browning stainless stalker w/boss in 7mm Rem Mag. After hunting with that long barreled rifle for years I tried a friend of mine's Remington Model 600 with the 18.5" barrel and was hooked. I now have 3 of these rifles. One wears a VX-R 2-7x33 w/firedot 4 reticle, one wears a custom built VX-3 2.5-8x36 w/heavy duplex and M1 turret and the latest I just ordered a Zeiss Terra X3 2-7x32 w/#20 plex reticle from Bass Pro for $349.99 w a $50 factory rebate off that. The scopes in this power range are generally about an inch shorter than the 3-9. For hunting at the ranges that most of us do (10 - 250 Yrds.) you really don't need more magnification than this. I prefer a heavy reticle that shows up better in low light. The VX-R series has the lighted reticle which is nice but, to be honest is not really needed if you have the heavy duplex. You can go to the Leupold custom shop (https://customshop.leupold.com/) and order a VX-3 2.5-8x36 matte finish with the heavy duplex reticle for $434.98. IMHO this is probably the best hunting scope out there for the money.
