I have never had a bolt action rifle. I am looking to purchase and am wondering what would be the best setup/caliber to start out with. Would eventually upgrade for a more customized rifle. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Best Caliber / Setup for.................? Hunting? Competion? Plinking? Varmiting?

I guess you are just looking for an all around setup. Caliber .308Win everything is easy to find. Ammo, brass, bullets, dies ect. It will drop anything in North America with the right bullet. It has very respectable accuracy and it has a pleathora of load data and ballistic info. Many shooter start here then later get into other claibers such as 6mm, 6.5mm, .260Rem ect.

Gun - the Remington 700 is the AR-15 of bolt guns. Any company that makes aftermarket parts for a bolt gun makes something for the 700. If you decide to go custom you can have the action trued and build off of it. You can recoup some cash by selling off the factory parts that you replace. I just sold my bottom metal and stock. I currently have what started out as a 700P at the gunsmith for a build. The only thing that will be factory still on the gun is the action albeit trued.

My second choice would be a Savage FP-10. One of the advantages of the Savage is you can swap barrels and have different caliber (of course it has to be the same bolt face) without the need of a gunsmith.

Your gonna haveto spend ALOT (And be a GOOD shooter) to beat a Savage 110 in 308 or 30-06

    Very true.

For hunting, the Savage Classic/Hunter/Weather Warrior series are excellent choices at a very reasonable price. For competition, look at the Savage Target/Varmint/Law Enforcement series.

Additional note: Hunting rifles make very poor competition rifles. A Savage Varmint rifle in .308 would weight a little more (than a hunting rifle) but could easily go from the deer stand to a 600 yard F-class match.

I bought a Savage 110 in .270 Win a couple of years back (primarily because they were easy to get in a LH version), and liked it so much I bought a Model 14 Classic in .308 Win earlier this year. They are extremely accurate rifles, and the Accu-Trigger system was a game-changing innovation, IMHO.

When they said Savage Arms made some serious moves that shook up the arms market- they weren't kidding.....Just my .02....
