Has anyone experienced this? I believe it's the GoldenRod brand.

It has plenty of space around it, has been plugged into an outlet for 2 years and never one tripped the circuit.

I smelled a burning smell and saw tiny holes smoking, was burning up from the inside. Was filled with what appears to be ash.

Nothing was dripped on it. It was immediately unplugged.

Never had one but, I had an oven heating element burn out and it looked pretty much the same when it burnt as the pics you are showing.
May just have been its time to burn out.

    Very scary.
Check out Peets safekeeping dryer. I've been using this system for about a year with no issues so far.
