IMO, Rugers are never an upgrade from a S&W. They are on this planet for the sole and respectable task of abuse. If you were buying a platform to launch Elmer Keith fireballs, you'd want a GP-100 anyway.

There is nothing bad about the SP101 and I would be willing to carry one myself given other choices. However, they are not nearly as nice as the corresponding S&W revolver which is where my money would go, absent a local Ruger bargain.

I have seen a few finely-worked SPs that could easily compete with Smiths but the money invested to do so makes one wonder why they didn't get the S&W from the start.

I bought one for my dad in 327 Fed magnum and love it. I would call it a medium framed revolver meaning you don't need the hands of a basketball player to hold it. The weight of the gun also helped manage recoil and yet it wasn't noticeably heavy due to the balance. The 357 magnum would obviously have a bit more recoil. Realguns also has a nice write up: <http://www.realguns.com/Commentary/comar168.htm>. I do recommend the gun. I am looking for one in 327 fed magnum which Ruger has discontinued. I would not recommend the 327 magnum you reload and that is different story.

Given the choice between a Ruger SP 101 and a S&W 642 I would take the Ruger all day every day.

I carry the 357 SP101. Have for about 2 years and I'm really happy with it. I keep it in the front right pocket wearing cargo style pants and shorts. I've had 1911's, Glocks, etc.. but since getting this pistol all I have are revolvers! Some say it might be too heavy, but I've found it to be no problem whatsoever...except a good fitting belt is recommended, it will pull my right side down if I wear loose pants are shorts and a crappy belt. Give it a try I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Thanks guys. Trying to locate one now. I prefer the grips with wood (or whatever it is) inserts. Don't need the new talo engraved version though. Haven't been able to find it.

I agree I own a Double Action only without a hammer, so easy to pull from my cargo pants pocket and have become very proficient with it at 30 feet. Cheap practice with 148 gr wadcutters and carry with 158 JHP Hornady ammo. Can't go wrong with an SP101.

I have both and cannot think of an advantage of the SP over the 642+P if the intended use is concealed carry. I CC every waking hour and the 642+P is extremely comfortable given its lighter weight, and I like the idea of the internal hammer to keep "stuff" out of the internals.
But as far as dependability and function, I'd be totally comfortable with either. Let me know if you want to sell the 642.

Yes, .357 is a fight stopper! The 125gr is the best load for protection. 158gr and higher are hunting rounds that will over penetrate people. I often carry a S&W Mod 60 .357. I do not like the light J-frames. I would love to get a Ruger SP 101 when the extra funds are available.

The SP101 is a good solid workhorse. The only problem you will find is that it is a little larger (longer) than a J-Frame and therefore a little more difficult to stick in your pants pocket without the grip poking out.

Yep that's the one. Saw it at a Gun show a few weeks ago for $510, and kick myself now for now picking it up right then.

I hear what folks are saying about the double action only versions, but frankly, after carrying the 642 for about 2 yrs, I can honestly say I prefer a hammer. I considered the S&W model 60 and may get it one day, but for whatever reason, I've got my heart set on the sp101.

Well, Kygunco.com sent me an email today saying they had the wiley clapp version in stock for 580 shipped. It should be on its way to my FFL Monday.

Now go find the stainless gp100 wiley clapp to match it!...it was a limited production btw. Only the blued version is still produced.

I saw a bead blasted version at the Lafayette gun show today... almost bought it, but passed. Got a 6" GP100, my first handgun. Love that thing. I did make my last payment and picked up a S&W 686 plus 4" today though.
