For a long time I have wanted to rust blue one of my AK's. I finally did it, or started anyway. I started with most of the smaller parts, and it is a very simple process. The rifle is the fist one I built with the help of bam bam way back in 08. I started by blasting all of the parts then degreasing with acetone. I used Laural mountain brown and degreaser. It is easier to work with, you don't have to be as careful with the fingerprints.

Once the solution is applied parts are left to rust.

Once there is a good coat of rust parts are placed in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes. Distilled water must be used.

When they are removed from the water there will be a coat of black soot on the parts. This has to be carded off. I was using a stiff wire brush at first and it was too rough and removing some of the blue so I switched to 0000 steel wool and one of those green military brushes and the parts started to look better.

It usually takes between 4 and 6 cycles to get the color your looking for, once done coat with boiled linseed oil and let sit for a couple of hours and your done.

That looks great! I may have to try that on my type III clone when finished.

I may be regretting doing this once I start on the barreled reciever, lots of hard to reach places. Also I would recomment removing the mags catch from the trigger guard and front sight post and drum and blue thise seperately then reinstall.

A rust blue on an AK? I guess I should use a spray on paint, I mean gun finish, on my P08 Luger, just to the world in balance. J/K.

I've always wanted to try a rust blue. That sure looks great in the photos.

It is not that difficult just time consuming. I would not refinish the P08!

Almost done. I need to order another mag catch pivot pin and blast and blue the stock, then it will be 100% done. I didn't realize how crappy of a picture that was.

You make it seem a whole lot easier than what I remember reading up on the process years ago. I recall it being a weeks long tedious process that could be easily ruined by an accidentally placed finger print.

It has taken me a long time because of work and other thing I have to do. With the laurel mountain rust blue you can get away with touching the parts some without gloves. It is not as sensitive as some of the rust blue solutions. I had a little trouble too, the himidity levels were lower with this front that came through and the part did not rust like I wanted it too.

How many coats did you make before it began to blacken?

I'm kinda digging the patina, it's fitting of this blade.

As always I wish I would have taken a before and a completely cleaned pic.
