Last week i was in Academy in Kenner buying a handgun. I had finished up the paperwork with the sales associate and was doing the review with the manager when a older gentleman came in and asked for help. The sales associate that help me first said sure. The older man then reached into his pocket and pulled out a Crown Royal bag, reached in and out came a .38 snub nosed revolver, cocked and loaded. He had the gun in his hands and reached up to say that he did not know how to decock the gun. Now i'm maybe 5 feet away and a loaded gun pointing at me and the manager, needless to say i ducked out of the way and so did the manager. Thankfully the associate grabbed the gun and put his hand over the gun covering the hammer and disarmed the man, unloaded and held the gun until he could be escorted from the store. The older man said he cocked the gun and didn't know how to decock the gun to make it safe. Alot of discussion went on after that. I thought is share with all.

Wow, glad all worked out well in the end. The dude isn't the smartest putting a loaded and cocked gun in his pocket like that, course the crown royal doesn't help either.

Some people are just stupid. It is a shame that stupidity can be seriously dangerous to everyone else! Sounds like they handled it well.

I think the manager was going to talk to the employees to see how this could be avoided in the future. I good learning experience.

Quick thinking and action by the Academy employee. I have found Academy's personnel (with one exception) to be very helpful and safe. The one exception was an older lady at the store on the Westbank who helped boresight a rifle for me. She then walked me and the rifle to the front door with the butt of the rifle resting on her hip (barrel to the ceiling) and her finger curled into the trigger guard. Looked like one of those fake Western photos you see at the county fair.

How old was this man? Could be that some form of dementia has set in and he doesn't have all his marbles anymore. Sounded like a bad situation, glad all turned out well!

Escorted from the store? For what, being a moron? Did Academy help him, teach him not to do stupid **** like this again, or is he now going to go to another store with the same problem?

    +1. Poor guy.

Although, first thing I would have done was remove the bullets....if I didn't know how to decock it. So, guess we can assume he didn't know how to take them out. But, then again, how did they get in there in the first place?

Gun ownership is a right. There is no need for training. training is repugnant to the constitution. ;)

I just typed out probably a page long explanation on how I handle similar situations while working the gun counter at Academy, but it is impossible to try to explain all the different ways I could and, in some cases, have handled similar situations. Luckily the employee was able to safely remedy the situation. If I was placed in the SAME EXACT situation, hopefully, I would have been able to handle it with the same outcome of no injuries. In most situations similar to this, I try, to the best of my ability, to reduce the chances of a gun actually making it out in the open in the customers hands. You never know what is going to happen, so I just have to be on my toes, and hope I am cabable of handling ANYTHING as best as I can.

Now picture this: I'm deaf, as we all know. So, I never would have heard the stupid old man say, "I need help." I would have seen a purple velvet bag in his hand, he reaches inside it, and pulls a handgun out. Now, what am I supposed to think? I would have drawn my gun and told him to drop it, making a fool of myself. Furthermore, it is my personal policy that if I ever draw my gun in public, I will call the police and let them know about the situation.

This REALLY would have made law-abiding CHL holders look bad.

Maybe deaf people shouldn't carry guns? :dunno:

Definitly a hazardous job. Think about how easy it would be for a whackjob to go into Academy with a pocket full of 12ga buckshot, ask the clerk in guns to let him look at a shotgun, load with 3 shells in about 3 seconds, and really start some bad stuff?

If you guys aren't packing, and my guess is your not because of comapny policy or some bulls**t insurance constraint, you are helpless young man.
