Does anyone know where to buy "Joint vetch" AKA: deer vetch, aeschynomene near (within 50 miles) of Lafayette??

You probably have already thought of this, but we usually get ours from some of the local farm supply / farmer's co-ops....May want to call a few in your area.

Thanks a lot guys, haven't thought to call co-ops yet, will do. I found that Atlas, here in Breaux Bridge has it but, it's real spendy ($7.55/lb or $225/50 with ~$50 shipping).

Just gonna have to call around, I may order directly from Hancock seed.

Just wondering, does vetch need innoculant to germinate like clover does?
I do know it prefers a moist soil to perform well. May want to consider that in plot location.

I'm not sure about the germination. Some of the guys in our lease are Mississippi hunters and swear by vetch. I'm a bit of a novice at food plots in general (other than reading) and deer vetch even less. The thing I like about it is that it's similar to the "wild peas" the deer in the Atachafalaya basin pretty much live on. And, our lease is just on the East side of the basin. We're also planning on doing a combination of corn or soy, ground vegetation, feeders...,

Thank you all for such good suggestions - giving me stuff to ponder.

P.S. Now, if I can find that one very stupid deer to just come stand real still in my back yard where my archery target is now - I just might not miss.

One more suggestion: Never underestimate the power of good old fashioned ryegrass.
It's never a bad idea to plant some of that around your food plot.....

most if not all "food plot mixes" contain a high ratio of rye grass as it is... but on top of that we do usually plant food plot mix plus rye grass as a "filler"
