I personally think that more law enforcement organizations should avail themselves of the 1033 program. It's not just weapons, but lots of other stuff too.

Section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1997 authorizes the Department of Defense to transfer excess military property to state and local law enforcement agencies. The eligible agencies in law enforcement activities are government agencies whose primary function is the enforcement of applicable federal, state and local laws, and whose compensated law enforcement officers have powers of arrest and apprehension. Preference is given to counter-drug and counter-terrorism activities.

    Types of Property:

Body armor, night vision equipment, APC's, aircraft, first aid supplies, weapons, surveillance equipment, Kevlar helmets, gas masks and filters, generators, vehicles, etc.

LESO/1033Under section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 1997 the Secretary of Defense may transfer to federal and state agencies personal property of the Department of Defense, including weapons that the Secretary determines as suitable for use by agencies with law enforcement activities. Agencies with law enforcement activities are defined as government agencies whose primary function is the enforcement of applicable federal, state and local laws and whose compensated law enforcement officers have powers of arrest and apprehension. All requests for weapons from state and local law enforcement agencies must be submitted through the appropriate governor appointed State Coordinator for approval. A listing of State Coordinators is available upon request from the Defense Logistics Agency's Law Enforcement Support Office. You may visit their website at Law Enforcement Support Office. You can also download an application from the following link 1033 Application Packet. For more information about this program please contact Thomas Jordan at 225-342-7860.

For $50, I take a semi-auto version. It sounds to me like they found an inexpensive way to arm their officers. Saving the Taxpayer money?
