Thanks to those who PMed asking about me. Yes, I'm fine. I'm working 6 nights this week and only one of those is at the Bluebonnett hospital. That night just happened to be tonight. I'm back at Murdercity the rest of the week. Our guys over at Murdercity have been calling us over here at Bluebonnet, aka The Hilton, and keeping us up to date on things. We've had EBRSO parked outside our ER most of the night just for extra security.
For those who don't know, BRGH Midcity had a shooting inside the hospital. There's a bit about it on the WAFB site and it will be all over the morning news.
I know a bit more than whats being aired but can't comment. Check the WAFB and WBRZ websites for more.
I'm going to get back to my duties.

There must be some mistake; this couldn't have possibly happened. Isn't there a "no guns" sign on the door there???

How can you be unarmed? Any hospital I've worked at security was armed with a handgun or LEO was the hospital security.

I started listening to it when they dispatched EBRSO and then switched to BRPD and listened all night while I was working.
I was thinking about you and wondering if you were working.

Didn't have a computer to check untill now.

    Glad you're OK.

Manhunt continues for suspected hospital shooter

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said two people were shot inside a Baton Rouge hospital early Friday morning, leaving one of the victims in critical condition.

Sources said a man and woman were shot in the incident. They said the man was shot in the head and the arm. He was taken to another hospital for surgery. He is listed in critical condition. The sources indicated the woman was shot in the shoulder and will be fine.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Darrell Garner, 36, has been identified as the suspected shooter. He remains on the loose. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Officers said the shooting happened at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City on Florida Boulevard around 12:35 a.m. Garner is wanted on two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

The hospital was put on lockdown while a search for the suspect was conducted. Police also closed Florida at North Acadian Thruway to traffic. The shooting suspect was not found and the all clear was given shortly before 5 a.m.

A search was also done in Baker. It centered on a truck on Grant Street in Baker. There was a trailer with other trucks on it attached to the vehicle being examined by police. Police also questioned the suspect's family.

No employees or patients were injured during the shooting, and normal shift operations have since resumed.

How can you be unarmed? Any hospital I've worked at security was armed with a handgun or LEO was the hospital security.

We are slick belt unarmed secuity. We get issued a 400MHz radio which are plauged with dead spots where you are unable to transmit clearly and a set of keys. I also check out a 2D Maglight. That's it.
Our Murdercity campus contracts with BRPD for a Rent-A-Cop. Most of them earn their extra duty pay sleeping in their unit outside of the ER on Peachtree St. Some even drive off into the East side employee parking lot and sleep there. If we need them we radio dispatch, our dispatcher looks up their cell phone on a list we have and calls them. The BRPD officer is seldom actually sitting in the ER or walking around the hospital.
Security Officers like me, employees of the hospital not contract security like at OLOL, are posted in the parking garage, dispatch, at the desk in the ER, patroling in a mobile unit and roaming interior and exterior of the hospital. The rovers are unlocking/locking doors and checking for problems. At any time there will be 7 or 8 Security Representitives on shift at Murdercity and another 5 or 6 at Bluebonnet.
In addition to walking around checking doors, stairwells, halls, offices and parking lots at the Hospital itself we patrol and check buildings/properties the hospital owns/leases. We even patrol neighborhoods which are part of the Midcity Redevelopment District (ie Park Hills Subdivision) since BRGH is a major supporter of that program. So we are driving around in our patrol unit with our yellow lightbar flashing all throughout the night in the area many know as Midcity but lots know better as Murdercity.
We patrol several buildings up and down North St including LifeShare Blood Center, La Internal Medical Associates aka LIMA, our old Peds Rehab building, the School of Nursing building, the PHNS building on the corner of Acadian and North and the Occupational Health, Famil Health, Behavioral Wellness clinic and a building leased to Doctor Banks and Labcorp. Then we drive a couple miles down Florida to Mall City and check our Warehouse on Goya Ave between Ardenwood and Donmore. Not a very safe place to be at night.
    brghsecuritymap.jpg

All unarmed with radios which seldom transmit clearly if at all. There is no LEO contracted for the Bluebonnet campus. If we have something we can't handle inhouse we call the 7 digit phone number for EBRSO and have deputies dispatched.

Yale have you thought about changing employers or careers? Unarmed security is not worth the pay.

Thanks. By the way there are not any Gunbuster signs at either of our campuses but we do have a hospital ploicy stating that nobody (employees, visitors, patients ) except of on duty LEOs area allowed to carry guns in our hospitals. Policy says if we (security) learn someone has a gun we are to tell them to take it and put it in thier car in the parking garage/lot or we secure it in our safe. If they fail to follow the policy we notify the police. They get charged with Remaining on Property/Trespassing.
I was once called off my post at Bluebonnet to take a gun being kept at the ER nurses station. A patient had come in with it and the charge nurse took it and held it. I put it in our safe until he was ready to leave a few hours later. IT was a very nice looking 1911. No bullets. The mag and chamber were completely empty. They other guards were scared to touch it.
I'm one of the few "gun guys" on the payroll in security.
For instance, the crew I worked with at BB last night=
    1-Me,
2-Ms Karen- works Security and also as a cleaning lady for Janicare.
3-Toni- Security at BRGH for 10 years, Contract airport unarmed security, college student at Southern Uni.
4-Cornell- Jr High PE teacher, part time security guy for BRGH
5-Torry- Valet supervisor for Hollywood casino, part time security with BRGH
6-Jonard-works at a car dealership in BR, Part time security for BRGH.
Off work last night but usually assigned to Bluebonnet
Warren- Retired Chemical plant unit foreman.
Jackie- another Janitor, she's with the company that cleans EBR schools.
Harry- Retired from Jetson Correctional (Juvie Prison).
Not much different at Murdercity campus. There are a few retires and one guy who used to be a deputy in Arizona or New Mexico before coming to La.
Someone says we shoudl be given guns. Most of my fellow Security members don't want anything to do with guns. A couple of them CAN'T have guns. One told me that with his temper he's better off not getting near a gun. One female said that her brother lives with her and is a drunk dopehead who would probably get her gun and kill someone.
If we were given guns I expect half to quit. They would rather walk around dark parking lots and walk around buildings on North St at 3am checking doors and not have a gun. Heck, I'm the only guy at Murdercity who checks out a Maglight. I figure at least they give me a metal tube full of batteries to swing at someone if I need it.

Oh yeah, mentioned in another thread...Cellphones. We are stictly forbiden to have them on us when on duty. Two night ago our shift supervisor told us at rollcall, "I know some of you carry them on you but make sure they are turned off and don't get caught with them."

I'm always thinking of changing. I've been a truck driver (JB HUNT), a warehouse selector/forklift op (Lewis Grocery), a Corrections Sgt/EMT (EHCC), A city Firefighter/EMT (St Gabriel), worked 2 weeks as a 911 trainee for EBREMS, Contract Security/EMT (American Citadel Security) and now work for BRGH (aka the General). I keep my resume up to date. I find something paying even a penny more than $12 an hour with even a few benefits I'm gone. I hear Reliant Transportation is looking for guys to drive their shuttle vans.
I have a gun on my hip or within reach every minute of every day except for the 8 hours a day I'm at work. It still messes with my mind.
