I am looking to get a field model Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88. I would like to get the 18.5" barrel to use the gun for home defense but still be able to use the gun for hunting, which is why I want the field model. Anyway, I can get the Maverick 88 new for $179 and I found a Mossberg 500 at a pawn shop for $159. The Mossberg 500 has a few minor cosmetic scratches, but otherwise it is in good condition as far as I can tell. So, which should I get, the Maverick 88 or the Mossberg 500? Is the Mossberg 500 that much better than the Maverick 88?

Personally i prefer the location of the safety on the 88. I am not a fan of safeties on top of the receiver. but i would recommend swapping the fore end if you do get the 88. I have a 500 slide tube on mine.

They are close enough to identical that it doesn't matter. Buy the one that has the safety that you prefer. For the price of the 88's, it doesn't make sense not to buy new.

Well, since I am the kind of person that never gets rid of a gun, I am going to get the new Maverick 88. I am going to put on a Phoenix Kicklite stock on it.
