My fiancee and I did some gardening today. She just went outside to look at the plants again and saw a snake climbing up under our vinyl siding. I saw the tail end of it before it got up under the siding. She wanted me to cut it in half before it got away, but I didn't want to murder the thing if it was harmless as it might be good to keep rodents away.

Looked it up on the internet and it is a speckled kingsnake. Common to the area, nonvenomous, sometimes kept as pets. I think it couldn't have been more than 2 feet long at the maximum.

My question is this - is there a problem with the siding if a snake can get up under it? I don't know what it is like under that siding, but I hope he can't get up in the walls, can he? Is there any problems with snakes in the walls that I should be concerned with, or should I leave him be?

If you don't like rats or mice around your house, king snakes are probably the best thing you could have hanging around outside. Siding on a house usually covers OSB or exterior plywood, so he is probably in a crawl (no pun intended) space between the siding and the OSB.

I had the same snake (two actually) crawl under the siding of my last house too. The thought of them making snake babies in my wall made me not sleep right for months.

and he'll find a way out

We have a lot of snakes but they never make it into the house

Dogs...no cats but I have lots of dogs

There is a yard treatment we used, has tiny chloroform balls ( I think thats what )...with ant poison. we had no snakes with that

Don't remember the name, gonna look for that

If you DO HAVE a snake in the house remember where water lines and power wires in the house...don't shoot there ( works for me )

    +1

and Speckled Kings are very cannibalistic so your yard will be rodent and snake free...well almost.

Great snake to have around, not very aggresive either. I have one that lives next to my shop in a hole in the ground, I'll catch him and let my son pet him every once in a while.

I think if my wife knew we had snakes in the walls she'd make me burn the house down.

Sounds like your wife and I have something in common. I have diagnosed myself as ophiophobic. I'm getting better, but there was a point in the not too distant past where I had trouble even looking at snakes on television...I had to look away during the Sons of Guns intro video until recently.

They left their house over garter snakes? Really? They're harmless. People should be more afraid of squirrels and cute little bunnies than of garter snakes. When picked up most snakes don't bite and if they do you barely feel it. Try picking up an adorable squirrel of bunny, they won't stop biting till you've bled to death.

Deano, seriously my man you need to come with me one weekend on a snake hunt and we'll fix your problem.

That being said, I run in circles and scream like a little girl if a spider gets on me.

Haha, I remember one time back when I was at Beale, there was the tiniest little snake chillin' in the dude's bathroom and my friend who is terrified of spiders had to come get the little bastard before I would even take a ****.

He had a blast making fun of me, but I just **** in his Cheerios anytime I see a spider that is nearly invisible to the naked eye. I like spiders and won't even kill them unless it's a brown recluse or black widow. Other than that, I'll either leave it be or try to take it outside so it can deal with the mosquitoes. I've been bitten in my sleep by spiders and just had some minor swelling, but never anything serious.

If the snakes bother you that bad you can ,if no other animals around .place moth balls around you house . I use them in the barn for snakes, rats and even skunk who have nested in my barn until I started that process. There is also another item that is non poision called snake away available at farm supply stores however much more expensive that moth balls . Good luck with the snake hunting
