You can't stop someone from using the number . Short of obtaining a new number which is possible but probably not worth the hassle .
Like the man said , never carry the card .

He can make a request to have Trans Union, Experian and Equifax put a security freeze on his credit file. This will prevent anyone from obtaining credit using his information. They will assign him a PIN number that he can use anytime a legitimate creditor needs to see his credit file.

    Ditto above, but......
In todays age, if someone wants any info on you and has just one other thing, they can get the res very easy. Say if they have your name and address or DOB, a savy computer criminal can have ALL your info including credit reports, credit card and bank account numbers in seconds.
Basically, safeguard your info as much as possible, but be aware that someone that wants your info can get it no matter what you do.
