Ok, so I am thinking of getting an AR10 SuperSASS soon from Armalite. I don't know alot about all the 7.62 NATO rifle offerings out there, though, so I thought I would entertain thoughts from y'all on whether the AR10 is best for me.

Precision is a priority, though not enough to warrant a bolt action.

Quadrails are a must, so that I may shittify it to my heart's content.

If it ain't black, it ain't gonna be mine. I don't have evil brown rifles disease.

Decent availability of replacement parts is a must.

Threaded barrel to accept FS/SSes a must.

Ease of repair / maintenance a huge plus.

Extra credit is awarded if it looks cool.

ETA: this must be a new rifle still in production, and it must be semi-automatic.

From what I can tell, with that being my criteria, the AR10 seems like my best bet. Any of y'all have one? Thoughts/impressions?

Any other rifles that would be a contender in those categories?

Are they still selling HK91? I couldn't find it on their web site, nor the G3.

I want to get this one new. Maybe the next one I will build from various sources.

I do not need to have all my needs met with stock options (can buy a quadrail if the rifle doesn't come with it), but it needs to be a new rifle with new parts, when all is said and done.

    Thanks for the reply!

I have only ever seen one. A guy was at my range the other day shooting it. He had just gotten it. The hammer retaining pin fell out while he was shooting. I'm sure that was a fluke (maybe a gun shop associate fooling with it), but it still made me go "hmmm."

I did actually look extensively at their stuff while I was researching what to get. I forget why I opted Armalite, but I did a SxS comparison of the two (what they came with, features, price, etc.), and at some point the Armalite won out.

Any thoughts as to specifically why I should look again?

    (Thanks for the reply!)

Well, that would have gotten my attention as well.

I have never seen/shot an Armalite, so I can't comment on them. I have been around several DPMS 308's. Both rifle and carbine versions, and they all performed as they should.

Just my experience and YMMV. Your money, buy what you feel most comfortable with.

I have a DPMS LR 308 with the Quad rail, MagPul PR/S Stock, and a Haris Bi-pod, and JP 3# trigger. It went to FBI Sniper school last August and maintained 3/4 MOA out to 300 Yards.

I have a friend that has the Armalite AR10T with similar mods and I find it is not as accurate. It hangs out at 1-1.5MOA. I have personally gotten groups just over .5 MOA out of my DPMS with Black Hills.

For what you would pay for an AR10T you could get the DPMS with the barrel bead blasted, threaded and with the quad rail forearm. The only thing about the DPMS is it comes with a standard AR trigger.

As far as the trigger pin issue, that would be the result of the hammer spring not being installed properly. It sounds like someone didn't read the instructions before installing a new trigger.

Anyway- I have sold hundreds of DMPS rifles in the past 3 years and have not had a single problem.

ta2d, that is certainly useful info. Thank you very much.

I will go back to the drawing board, and do a side by side comparison again, keeping that review in mind.

Will post here when done (probably not tonight).

LouisianaCarry, The PTR91 is still being produced in Farmington, CT. Go to http://www.PTR91.com. for a look. The PTR91 has a weaver rail welded to the receiver top for a very secure mount. It can get in the way of the German Hensholdt stanag sniper scope, but should pose no problem for a conventional scope & rings. These rifles have very low recoil transmitted to the shooter & are very accurate.
DSA makes some fine FAL rifles http://www.dsarms.com
Of course these is the Springfield Armory M1A NM.
I own the above rifles & can recommend them as I enjoy them all.
I don't yet own a DPMS in .308, but give me some time to earn some more bread, & I may yet score one.
