I kind of feel bad for her but at the same time I can't help but wonder how someone can be so stupid!! New York City should be one of the biggest no brainers to not bring a gun.

Some states don't require a long class like our 9 hour class to get a CHP. Nor do you have to even fire a weapon to get the permit. Some states it's just a matter of giving the Sheriff $50, pass a criminal background check and just like that your permit is issued to you. Not the case in TN. Tennessee requires an 8 hour class with 4 hours of class room time and 4 hours of range time. So, maybe the idea of carrying in other states was covered in the Basic Gun Safety class which must be taken but who knows what the instructor had time to go over and what got left out.

Mercy urged for Tenn. Tourist who took gun to 9/11 Memorial

The Manhattan DA should show mercy to a Tennessee tourist who was busted for bringing a gun to the 9/11 Memorial, considering the weapon is registered in her home state, lawmakers and legal experts told The Post yesterday.

City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens), chairman of the Public Safety Committee, personally asked Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office not to push for the 3 1/2-year minimum sentence for Meredith Graves, 39.

“By prosecuting this woman and seeking 3 1/2 years of jail, we are shooting our own [gun-control] efforts in the foot and giving the rest of the country ammunition,” Vallone said.

NY lawmakers sympathetic to gun-packing tourists

    Now she’s got Albany’s attention.

The Tennessee tourist arrested for bringing her home-state-registered handgun to the 9/11 Memorial has picked up some powerful allies in the capital — who plan to reassess the state’s stringent gun-possession laws.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), the state’s second-most powerful Democrat, said yesterday that he will have “a committee hold a hearing on this question, to see how exactly the law is being enforced and to look at the possibility that there should be changes in the law.’’

The changes could include tweaking the law to allow leniency for people with guns registered in other states who mistakenly bring their weapons to New York.

Unfortunately, I have family in Up-State NY and a brother who lives in NYC. I DESPISE the gun laws there. They have to have every handgun they own / carry (even if just to gun range), registered and written on their permit. They have to have a permit to buy a handgun, then another one to carry. In NYC, I thought I'd just carry a knife for protection in my back pocket. Turns out I could have been arrested for having a leatherman in my pocket out in public. F'n sheeple! I think the next time I'm in NYC, I'm going to call the police and request a police escort, every where I go while in the city. If they decline, then I'll ask for them to honor my CCW from my home state.

Why is it that NYC "NO GUN PERIOD" law wasn't struck down when the Supreme Court ruled that cities' laws were unconstitutional? I'm missing something.

Sad to see she was arrested, but one must wonder why she did not look up the gun laws of the state. If in doubt, don't bring the gun!

scumbag New York city cops/da/judges. The lowest form of humanity in America. NYC gun laws are mobster corruption that passed the Sullivan Act to disarm citizens and rival mobsters.

This poor woman should flee to tennessee and the State of Tennessee should refuse to extradite her (and tell the Feds to go to h--l if they insist)

The heller case does not apply to New York. Heller basically said that Washington DC (or any US city) cannot outright ban handguns, but they can regulate them. You can get both handguns and carry permits in NYC.... it's just very hard to do so, and they get to decide if you should have one or not. To have a gun in the state, you have to have a permit for the gun.... and you have to be a resident to get a permit.

Owning a handgun in NYC is very difficult and every time you want to get another, you end up taking days off from work to get the registration done.

In this case, this lady brought a gun into NYC which is a big no no. She broke the state's laws. YOU have to research where you are going if you are going to take a gun.

NY sucks when it comes to guns. I have no desire to go back to that state at all. I hope they change things for the better. NY is way out of line with their gun laws.

I'm not sure how anyone doesn't know that NY is not gun friendly.

Back in the early '90s Harry Connick Jr was given a pistol as a Xmas present while visiting in NJ I think. He brought it to Kennedy Airport unloaded in the box, gave it to security and asked how to go about getting it back to N.O. NYPD arrested him, kept him overnight and he got off doing Public Service announcements.
