secret is close to your twic card level, TS, in its basic form is tougher, took me about 6 months when I was younger, the older you are the longer it takes to find SOMETHING wrong with you..
They check financials, check ex girl friends, ex everything.. then they find someone who knows someone who doesn't like you and they find out what you really are like..

When you get into the clearances I have had, they ask about your sex life, your interests and habits.. Its a pain in the ass to renew every six months for a TS, so if you do not need it, dont bother.. a secret will cover most needs around the civilian world and probably half of the mil world.

It should not cost you anything if its for an employer, and unless you have a record, or bankruptcy its pretty easy to get a secret. Everything else is just remembering who, what, when, and where the work, school, house, addresses, phone numbers, all your parent's info, grand parent's info and such..

good luck.. IIRC I think the secret is eligible for 10 years.. not sure..

TS lasts 5 years. They don't get into that type of detail like sex life and stuff (from what I know). Basically, a company won't pay for one just because you want it. There needs to be a reason, such as a promotion or change of position which requires it. From applying to "read on", it takes about 8 months. From what I hear, it cost roughly $15-20 thousand for the investigation. The investigators contact and interview friends, family, and even people you don't remember. Your credit is a huge factor in getting your TS.

and yes, a Secret is good for 10 years.

Right on, thanks for the info. I currently have a secret. I'm worried that I'm often outspoken politically on the internet. Does any of that stuff come up? How about browsing history, pron and stuff?

My TS/SCI lasted 5 years and yeah, they went back to grade school for me. Depends on what you mean by "outspoken" but they will check.

I don't think looking at porn is a discriminator for getting your TS, as long as it's not kiddy porn. The investigators do check into if you have any connections to extremest groups (Black Panthers, White Supremacist, etc). They also look into anything that can discredit or lead them to believe you are hiding something. For example: The application asks about your marriage history and you leave out one of your 5 ex wives.
