    I spent six months in Iwakuni (while in the Marines) about one hour south of Hiroshima. During my time in japan I spent a whole weekend in Tokyo. I have been reading some comments and here are my two cents: excuse my butchering of the spelling of some of these.

    Tokyo
    rooypongi = Party district this is where most of the dance clubs are and most of the westerners hang out you will see every nationality there including Japanese of course. Great place to pick up girls if your game is good. Clubs don't close until sun up the next day so eat your Wheaties.

    Akibara = electronics district if you are a tech guy you will like this place. I bought some nice stuff here. Prices were a little higher than the U.S. while I was there, but things change with the money exchange rate. There is also more than electronics. If you have ever wanted to see a 7 story porn store this is the place along with 7 story video game shops, arcades, toy stores (Japanese Toy stores or the best you will see stuff even not being a kid you will want) and Maid Cafes where pretty girls dressed as french maids serve you food or drinks or legal massages.

    Shubya = same place they shot Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift good short term sight seeing spot.

    Uneo = Temples and Museums.

    Kabukicho = pleasure district. Name says it all a lot of night clubs with smoking hot women. Most of the Girls work for the clubs so they are going try to get you to keep feeding them drinks so you can run up a bar tab. And if you are looking to bed a girl this is the area where brothels or also located. Let it be known the prostitution is officially illegal in japan, but the Japanese view that what ever agreement between two adults is made behind closed doors is their business. This area is kind of shady stay aware of whats going on.

    Tokyo Disney is the same as U.S. Disney except nothing is in English, but still fun.

    The empireal Garden is nice to. Make sure you have time and good walking shoes.

    Subways best transportation in Tokyo you can go anywhere you want in the city and come out within to blocks, it takes a little bit to learn how to navigate.

    I slept a whole day after Tokyo. You will need a second vacation to recover. Take pictures chances like this don't come often.

    A lot more than this just not enough time to wright. Good Luck

    First thing I was going to post is get a rail pass and it looks like you're ahead of the game on that.

    Get up to Koyasan if you have a chance. You have to buy a ticket on private rail, but the guidebook only talked about how you can stay with monks which is kind of neat but not my thing. Buddy I was travelling with was all about that though so I went up there for a day with her and the place is just oozing with history and old architecture. Everyone who's anyone in Japanese history up through WWII is buried there. The Tokugawa family cemetery is open to the public and all of the monastaries have mons from the major feudal clans that sponsored them.

    Kagoshima was leveled during the war, but they have a great walking tour of the area where Saigo Takamori fought and died and was the seat of the Shimazu clan that was the major force behind the Meiji restoration and Japanese modernization. Good sweet potato liquor too.

    Sekigahara battlefield is worth a visit, it's nto well preserved but it's kind of off the beaten track and a chance to see a little bit more of the countryside, the museum has some interesting firearms there as well. Also check out Koyasan, not a popular place for tourists but they rebuilt the castle using the old tools and techniques and the gardens are amazing. It wasn't hit hard during the war so they have a lot of the old architecture there as well to check out.

    The war shrine at Yasukuni is worth a visit, definitely check out the museum for a good overview of modern Japanese military history up to about 1930, after which it becomes some of the most hilariously blatant propaganda I've ever seen. It actually beats the China People's Revolutionary Military Museum for this. They also have a locomotive from the Thailand-Burma railway that's the first thing when you see walking in the door. Not subtle.

    Ugh. I just saw the post dates. Sorry about that. Stuff for next time maybe?
