I could see this being appropriate for a parent that is not a 'gun person' and believes their kid may be involved with guns, gangs, drugs, etc. Better than mom putting away some socks and accidentally hitting a trigger.

Even if it could be intended to help parents with "out of control" violent teens, it reeks of a Trojan Horse.
It also seems to be the reverse of Hitler asking kids to turn in their parents.
Government does not solve problems. Government causes problems.

even if that were the true intention, and its not, the problem is the communication. Notifying the public that you'll perform searches at their request, as a service, is one thing. Telling them that volunteering for household searches is helping society fight a plague is something else. No idea what this idiot was thinking.

I have a few that beat this on the scale of stupidity.

"If you like you doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor!"
"This will actually reduce health premiums!"
"This law will not raise taxes!"
"What difference does all of this make now?"
"We have to pass the Bill to see what's in the Bill!"

    Shall I go on?

Wait.. Wut? Parents should be parents, and law enforcement should be law enforcement and never the two shall mix, unless the child is that of the officer in which case see parent..

If they want to looks good for the public, then they should just collect toys for needy kids in December, host a Thanksgiving dinner for seniors, and do an Easter egg hunt.
