Anybody know any reason why two fully-loaded (Hellfires visible) Marine Corps AH-1W (Possbily the new AH-1Z Viper models) would be flyin' around escortin' a UH-1N (also possibly the new Y-type Venom model) Huey around with no major USMC base to operate out of?

I'm aware that they can operate out of AF and Army bases but why would they be flyin' around? I thought I read there was an air show in Shreveport around this time awhile back, but I can' remember enough to say for certain.

    Anyone know anything?

Either that, or it's possible they *might* have been performing training exercises at the JRTC at Polk. Sometimes they utilize the Esler air field, Beauregard has built that airport up to be a pretty cool training facility.

This. If you're anywhere between AEX and Fort Polk, the may have simply been going back and forth. When I used to operate out of AEX on Forest Service contracts, the aircraft used in the training exercises were flown in and out of there on C-141's, kind of like this:

^That makes sense. Saw a C-5 and an unidentified military cargo jet fly over last night. Looked like that 141, thought it was a tanker refueling it, but it wasn't.

    Thanks

I have been hearing almost daily flyovers by f16s and blackhawks for about 2 months now. Its upsetting the conspiracy theorist in me.

uh, where in baton rouge are you? the blackhawks have been around since the oil spill (right at two months now). the hawks are ferrying state officials, etc. back and forth to the coast. not sure about the F-16s. have you actually seen the fighters or are you just hearing jet engines?

Blackhawks were before the oil spill, just not as many. I have seen many f16s, and heard their engines. I am almost always outside at work, so I can pay attention to these things.

OK. I guess I'll have to pay more attention, but I live right there myself and as a pilot, I usually notice aircraft overhead and I haven't heard or seen the fighters.

Okay, I may have exaggerated with using the word daily, but however they are becoming pretty common. Usually flying north and south if I recall.
