Took my daughter for Memorial Day, my grandparents took me annually since I was a kid.

If you are from NOLA and had family that served or died in WW1, their names may be listed on one of the plaques:

I used to live right there, on Pauline Street. (left in '84).

I used to live on Bartholomew until the early 80's. But relatives lived on Independence and Pauline as well.

Do you have any relatives names on there as well?

nola_ texted me Saturday morning to tell me that my great-grandfather's name is on there, and it's misspelled.

Like nola_, my family is from the 9th ward. They moved out to the east (New Orleans East) in the early 70's.

I appreciate learning about this from my high school classmate.

I passed by that a little while back and was wondering what war it was for; the street isn't well lit so you couldn't read the top of the arch. I kind of guessed it was WWI based on the references to "American Expeditionary Force" on the plates though.

Grew up about two blocks away on Pauline St & Royal St. Remember seeing it and standing in awe while me and my sisters walked to the Library near to it as kids. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks Nola. I grew up in Metry & worked in Nola for years & never knew about the Arch. I'll have to find an excuse to go down there & take some pics. I Have seen the Dough Boy many times at Tulane & Banks. They moved him to build the hospital, so no telling where he is now.

The Macarty name is very prominent in Louisiana history.

Part of the original Macarty plantation served as field headquarters for Andrew Jackson during the Battle of New Orleans.

But most recently, one of the daughters was a character in American Horror Story.

Marie Delphine de Macarty was married three times, the last to Nicolas Lalaurie.

And so she was then Madame Marie Delphine Lalaurie.

I forgot to mention that this was the first permanent monument built in the United States in honor of World War 1.

My grandfather was in the Army in WWI. My dad still has the uniform hanging in a closet. It's heavy wool and had to be uncomfortable as all hell. I never knew about the arch, but it makes sense for it to be there, as New orleans was a major embarkation point - it's what got Storyville closed down.
