In the Viet Nam era, in real life...would Forrest Gump or Bubba really have been drafted? Too much time on my hands, but serious question.

Yes, I was drafted with and went thru Basic with a guy that was blind in one eye. Served in Vietnam with a SSG that had only one lung. There really didn't seem to be any rejection criteria.

I was watching FMJ with my dad once and I made the comment that no one like Gomer Pyle would have beed drafted. My dad said there were guys in Basic with him that had trouble tying shoes, could not read, did not know left from right. This was in 67 and 68, he said they were taking anyone.
