Anyone know any good city or gov places, pretty much anything that is not a private organization? Going to college and have a part time job, but am quite bored on the weekends... Looking for like habitat for humanity or park cleanup....pretty much anything within a two hour drive of Hammond... I've called around Hammond, and no one has given me a call back yet(probably not their top priority lol)
    anyhow thanks.

Not sure if you've already called or not, but there is a Habitat office in Hammond - 985-542-6866. The Red Cross is always looking for volunteers. They will actually train you in CPR, shelter management, sandwich making, how to drive the meals on wheels truck, etc. Oh, and unless things have changed, they will want a background check on you including credit and mode of living. Almost every church around does mission work around the area such as building a wheelchair ramp at a home, etc.
North Oaks Hospital in Hammond is another. My wife volunteered there for a few years. They treat volunteers very well and really do appreciate that your volunteering. It's a private organization but you do help people. My wife worked in the surgery recovery area and helped patients after surgery. You don't empty bedpans or anything like that. As a bonus, if your so inclined, there are lots of single foxy nurses around.

i would say animal shelter too if you like animals. i believe all you really do is play with the animals and walk them. usually the people who work there are the ones who clean up the crap and stuff. they do it all in the morning so get there in the afternoon/evening if you dont want to do that. you can also foster some until they are healthy enough for adoption or someone wants them. i've been thinking of doing this as well

Lol I thought about working for the humane society, but if I did that, thanks to my pet loving crazy ass wife, I'd end up with 500 cats and dogs running around my place.. As for the Habitat for humanity, I've called and stopped down at the Baton Rouge office and gave them all my info and such, with them saying they would email or call, but have not heard back. which is amazing as I volunteered in Iowa for them so I could get my hours up to get my journeyman licensing(did plumbing and electrical) and I think I got a call or email daily requesting for help. Also wonder why they didn't tell me they had a affiliate in Hammond. I sent a email to the regional office in NOLA for the VA to see if I could get contact info for the local vet centers in Louisiana(I think Baton Rouge and NOLA both have one???)

Volunteer firefighter. Plus I heard that they qualify for tuition assistance. I don't know how their schedules work or anything like that but thought I'd throw it out there.

Habitat's stream of volunteers is down to a trickle, so they've had to dramaticly revise their work expectations. I know the guy in slidell if you need/want a contact. MR is also doing plumbing/electrical at their new warehouse last I heard.
