I'm using an older MSR waterworks. On the plus side it can be field cleaned (you can scrub the cartidge). Negative is it doesn't stop viruses. I treat w/ Potable Aqua+ first, then filter.
One of my friends has a General Ecology. Good filter, even handles viruses, but you can't clean it. We filtered water straight out of a swamp along Black Creek Trail. We had to scoop the algae off the top to get to the black water. Tried to not suck in any more scum than necessary. Tasted fine, no illnesses.
Those are the only two I have any first hand experience with. Katadyn has a good reputation but they're pricey.
I figure if we have to shelter in place due to whatever, I'll run out of clean water before running out of ammo. A water filter is critical.
I have one of the water bottles with the filters in it. Bought it years ago and haven't used it. I find these are easiest, you can just fill it up and go.
