What’s the most essential gear/supplies to have during a national emergency?

+1 @WhereIsIt? - Water or a way to purify it.

Some way to keep warm and dry.
Some way to defend yourself.
Some way to get food. ( I put this one here because if you can't do the first 3, you're dead, anyway)
Some way to stay concealed or blend in with everyone else. If you look all tactical, you're making yourself a target.

22 Rifle with lots of ammo. Essential for food. Everything becomes food if it gets bad enough. Plus I am cajun and can make a crow taste good.

I ate crow gumbo as a teenager back in the 70's. Good stuff. Pigtail stew is way better though.

Times are hard. I can't afford the lifestyle to feed the larger ones...

I always thought that food, water, shelter was actually in reverse order.

Shelter (incl security and protection from the elements)
Water (way to collect and store)
Food (pantry, long term stores, foraging).

After watching people stand in 100f heat for hours after Katrina for a tarp and 2 cases of water…I decided to start there.

Those who live in big cities are screwed. Those people who have nothing will try to take yours, they outnumber you. The smaller communities will do better.
