My wife inherited 2 old S&W revolvers from her Grandparents and I know nothing about them. I was wondering about any info such as values and possibly manufacturing date if anyone here might know about them. The first is a model 36 .38 special 2" bbl. Serial # 135xx and it has the marking F18 under the serial #. This one is in pretty good condition I'd say 90%. Still has the original wood grips but no box or other info. The second is a .38 special air weight. Model 37. Serial #192xx with the marking G3 under the serial #. This one is a little rougher condition- bluing is bad and the hammer looks like it was ameturely shortened (it sliced my thumb). It also has a piece put on the trigger to actually make it wider. Still has the original wood grips but again no box or other info. I will try to post pictures later tonight. Any info that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The 36 aka Chief's Special was introduced in 1950, the 37 was introduced in 1951.

Both serials are low, but I don't know exactly where they fall in manufacture date. A call to S&W will get you the answer.

Pictures would certainly be helpful, but I would agree that they would normally fall within the $350-450 range.

These J frames were manufactured prior to S&W stamping model numbers, a pre-36 and pre-37. Both were manufactured in 1952

ok, I just got my "know-it-all" card revoked. I really feel stupid. mod 37 serial # is 29j1xx and the mod 36 serial # is J2295xx. I should have seen them below the grips. And yes the grips match. I will be the first banned for stupidity!

Prices previously quoted are in the ball park according to my research boooks. Both of these revolvers have been discontinued by S&W. Prices will probably go up. I would hold onto them just because they are model that are no longer available and they are family heirlooms. David Hood

Yeah we were struggling with that. She fired the mod 37 and it had such a light trigger it scared her enough to not want to shoot it again. She wants something with a longer trigger pull and thought that she would use these guns as a trade or sell them to get something that she wants. I think that she will kick herself if she lets them go. At least I don't have to struggle with last minute Valentines day gift ideas!
