I have a authentic WWII Nazi officer sword that has been in my family since the 50's and my grandpa handed it down to me. My wife on the other hand doesn't want it in the house so I figured I'll see what's out there.
The sword is commonly called a "dovehead" pattern. All German Officers were required to purchase a sword, so we see many of them. They were a favorite "bring-back" by souvenir-hunting G.I.'s. There were a myriad of designs available from about 40 different manufacturers. The choice of pattern was up to the officer and his pocket book. The dovehead patterns were relatively cheap, (other designs having lion head patterns with jeweled eyes were also offered, but were more expensive), so most of the swords we see are in this design.
