That article is full of derp, but serious question: Why would any leo every need or be authorized to use night vision equipment in the course of their duties?
Because crime doesn't always occur during the day or in well lit areas.
That is why we have flashlights, spotlights, searchlights, flood lights, weapon lights, every kind of light. I don't see a need for peace officers to operate clandestinely in the dark. It is their job to bring the light to any situation, both literally and metaphorically. I feel like that kind of equipment will only lead to bad practices. To my mind, night vision = clandestine/black ops, and that is something that only belongs in a war zone.
Why do hunters need night vision?
Apparently you think "clandestine" or what we call "covert" surveillance is not necessary in modern law enforcement? Maybe we should send out press releases and Facebook and Twitter alerts whenever we plan to conduct surveillance? I'm sure that would be successful. The bad guys would probably just turn themselves and all their contraband over to us, because that's just the type of stand up people they are.
Of all the things to say cops don't need you pick NODs?!? But select fire carbines and semi auto M107s are ok?
That pic is showing the california bullet button. Its how you have to rig your magazine loaded guns so they will be safer.

Yes, but the caption under the photo claims they are loading the bullet into the weapon.
. I still don't like the idea of what inner city metro will likely use them for, though.
