I hear them in the woods on my property. Only time I worry about them is after dark when my young son walks his small dog. I always go out with him and carry a flashlight and a handgun. So far, they haven't come out of the woods while we are out there.

Back in the eighties, when I was stationed in Texas, I'd see lots of 'em. When (I'm assuming) prey was scarce, they'd learned to scavenge through garbage. That's what seemed to move them closer to human inhabited areas.
