It might be a long drive for you but False River has some giant Gars, I have seen some that were at least 8 feet long, If you go past Bonaventure landing heading north about a half a mile there is a area that has no camps and their is a old rotton pier in the water, their is a big flat area about 3 to 4 feet deep , I think the Gar spawn there...

They were all over up and down the levees in Henderson when I would fish there, but that's a bit of a drive, with the exception of private ponds, don't think I fished a body of fresh water in LA w/o seeing/catching gar.

I never cared much for fishing them, but another rig I've seen people use is take some cotton string/rope, fray the end up real good for about 6"-12" and tie some bait in the center. The gar will get their teeth all tangled up when they take the bait.

My buddy John C, wife Linda and I tried again locally at night. We got a couple takes but no hookups. No gar but caught a nice catfish. I hooked it and let Linda fight it. She says her arms are sore from the fight.
