Me and the wife want to live in CO. After retirement? Maybe the whole Idaho/Montana/Wyoming thing with lots of land, plenty of privacy and seclusion, and more freedoms to do what I want.

Soooooo, you people are the reason that the price of real estate out west is higher than giraffe nuts. Oh well, guess I'll have to save and save a bit more.

I've only ever really traveled in the southern US. Drove to Chattanooga, TN on a vacation four or five years ago and almost stayed. I didn't like the dirty hippies peddling terrible poetry for spare change but they were few and far between. Was only acosted by two in the whole week we were there.

The river (ochechobeestiffiegreeniewhatthehellever) front was nice. Heard Volkswagen opened a facility there recently.

Would love to go to one of the Dakotas or maybe Wyoming and at least try out a real winter.

Ya'll are nuts! I wouldn't mind Montana or Wyoming for a summer home, but winters there are brutal. As a kid I lived for a few years in Edmonton, Alberta. We went a month without getting above 0F. It hit 45below not including the wind chill. Sunrise was at 10am, sunset at 4pm. I'd like to go back for a visit, but live there? Nope.
I'd want to live somewhere where there were no natural disasters to worry about. No forest fires, no earthquakes, frequent tornadoes, mud slides, blizzards, or hurricanes. Outside San Antonio sounds interesting but I was thinking N. Mississippi or maybe northwestern AR.

    What would it be?

For me it would be idaho/montana. Give me 50 acres (mostly wooded) on the side of a mountain and I will be happy. Near a river or gravity fed water supply. My own firing range outside. Plenty of hunting and fishing, plus imo the most beautiful land in America.

I don't think that question is a very good one, in the sense that states are huge and vary more internally than from state to state. For example, where I live is pure crap compared to Baton Rouge. Yet it is within the same state.

I guess to answer the question, I am moving to Fayetteville, AR next year. This should explain everything:
    http://www.city-data.com/city/Shreveport-Louisiana.html
    vs.
    http://www.city-data.com/city/Fayetteville-Arkansas.html

Aside from that data, there are 3 hospitals in the city for me to choose from, land is $1-2K an acre for good property, it's a growing city with stable/decreasing crime, etc. and you have a lot more firearm rights there. For example, there is no state police registry for NFA weapons like there is here, and you can hunt with your suppressed SBR if you want to.

I would import 3 Rocky Mountains to Louisiana about 40 minutes drive and Florida's blue/clear water to most of our waterways, that way everything fun would be within an hour or so. This is where this is going, right?

Vermont......cuz I've always wanted to own a maple farm...and a diner that raised it's own pigs (bacon & ham) and chickens (eggs) served with, of course, maple syrup and an endless pile of pancakes!

Yeah, it's 3:45 in the am and I'm hungry. Still dreaming of my maple farm somewhere between Burlington and the Canadian border.

Honestly, Louisiana. As backwards as this place is, I love it here. I find muddy rivers, bayous, and old plantation ground prettier than any mountain.

Plus, I love heat and humidity. Not snow and cold.

I would like to live in a state of Bliss. Where there are no politicians or other criminal types. A place where the government kept it's nose out of people's business. Race baiters and welfare recipients were not allowed and every child was wanted and loved. A place where religions did not hate. Where honesty, integrity, and truth prevailed. There is no such place so the hill country of Texas is the next best thing.

About the only thing north of Burlington is Milton and St. Albans.

My mother was from Newport and I have spent forty some odd summers on the Lake there. Land is cheaper up there.

Sugaring is not full time, but something you do in the spring before the snow melts.

What diner raises its own pigs?

While I like privacy and the great outdoors, I'd also like to be within a short drive of a town of at LEAST 50k to make day trips and help keep the wife sane. I love the scenery of the Idaho, Wyoming, Montana area so I always thought about Ketchum, Idaho. BUT, LAcamper makes a good point, I HATE the cold. That said, I think I'd like to live 20-50 miles outside of Asheville, NC.

To much to leave behind down here though. My wife would lose her mind without her family and it IS quite handy with a toddler and baby on the way. Plus the father in law has enough toys and land to keep it interesting.

Asheville is a very nice place, at least that was my impression upon visiting. The people are happy, friendly, and I loved it.

If you don't want to go that far, though, my choice is like a clone of Asheville, only about 25K people less, and a lot closer.

Well I am in Galveston right now and It's hot. So any where that never gets above 80°. Northern Alaska, the south pole ( I live in South Louisiana, and I love it, but its hot there too.)

Somewhere in North Carolina sandwiched between the beach and the mountains.
Not to hot in summer and just enough snow in winter.

Honeymooned there almost 20 years ago and thought about staying.
