MANASSAS, VA -- Eight police officers were refused service at Buffalo Wild Wings on Wednesday, apparently because they had their weapons displayed.

The Prince William County Police officers were on duty, but were in plain clothes, said Daryl LaClair, a Prince William County resident who wrote a letter to the restaurant chain’s headquarters and started a public awareness campaign regarding the incident.

The group walked into the Buffalo Wild Wings located near Wellington Road and Market Street, but were refused service by an employee who said they had to secure the guns before they would be served.

The officers had their badges displayed but still weren’t served.

Scott Lupton, the general manager of the Manassas Buffalo Wild Wings location, sent an email to LaClair, apologizing for any confusion caused by the incident, which he calls a “huge misunderstanding.”

Patch obtained a copy of the letter and confirmed its validity with Lupton on Monday

Lupton said he wasn’t there on Wednesday, but should have been notified immediately. He learned of the incident on Thursday after returning to work.

“… There is no reason why those officers should have been asked to leave … police officers are always welcome in my establishment and even though we do have a no gun policy, as a company that excludes off duty police officer,” Lupton wrote. “As a company we are community oriented. We appreciate everything that police officers do for us.”

Last week he tried to reach out to the officers to apologize, but had not been successful. Lupton said he would reach out to the police department and personally apologize.

“For this to have happened at all is just absurd,” LaClair wrote Friday in an email to Patch.

Lupton said he went down to the Prince William County Police Department with an apology letter, but wasn't able to personally contact the police officers who visited his store.

Tell us in the comments what you think about this incident.

Did anything happen to the employee that refused to serve these guys? The statements from the manager make me believe that the employee acted on their own with this.

Guys, before you write them off, check with the restaurant. Most of those are franchise owned. It may have been only the franchise policy and not system wide.

BWW in Lafayette has had their sign up for a while. Once I noticed it, I kindly turned around and will never step foot there again. They do not support my rights, I will not support their business.

We need to start a poll between Hooters and BWW

    Hooters for me:cool:

oh, and that guy must not have been the sharpest knife in the drawer to refuse service to the plain clothed police. They had their badges showing.

On Amb. Caffrey? Never saw it - where is it, on the door? Man, I spend a lot of money in that place every month. If there is a sign I will ask for the manager next visit, inform that we are CCW holders and see what he wants to do. I'll leave for the last time if he supports that policy. (It's his right to refuse me service/entrance but it's my right to spend my money elsewhere.)

Hooters in Metairie sucks, we need a Twin Peaks, Tilted Kilt, or Bone Daddy's. But I really can't remember the last time I ate at a bww.

I did not know this. Either way, I rather the wings at Hooter's...

I like BWW. I didn't know they had a no carry policy. I'll still eat there though, their boneless wings are awesome!

Yea they changed their policy a year ago or more?
and started putting signs on the door.

    From Defensive carry;

This may be old news to many of you, but I wanted to share this communication regarding Buffalo Wild Wings' corporate policy prohibiting legal concealed carry within their establishments.

Me to them via website (http://listening.buffalowildwings.com/contact.php):
My family has been a regular customer (at least once a week) of this BWW's for almost two years. I was saddened to see a sign in the window prohibiting those who choose to lawfully carry a firearm from doing so.

The right to life and self-defense is the most basic of rights, and I find it despicable that BWW's would, by policy, prohibit someone from exercising that right.

Due to this policy, we will no longer be frequenting this BWW's nor any other.

    Their response:
Buffalo Wild Wings respects the right of individuals to carry firearms but we do not believe they are appropriate inside of a public restaurant. We are focused on the comfort, safety and enjoyment of all of our guests and have elected to exercise our right to restrict the carrying of firearms in our restaurants. We regret any inconvenience this may cause but believe that this policy is in the best interest of all of our guests and our Team Members.
I urge everyone here to carefully reconsider spending another dime at BWW's.

    Makes no sense

Pretty sure the Lake Charles BWW has this sign on the door.

Buffalo Wild Wings as a company does NOT allow ANY legally licensed person other than the police to carry a handgun into the premesis of their restaurants. Period.

A big stink occurred a while back about this whole thing and their Facebook page was BOMBARDED by people wanting the corporation to make a statement about this other than just posting a "No Guns Allowed" sign on their doors. It never happened. BWW deleted every single comment and never even acknowledged that they were posted.

**** on Buffalo Wild Wings. Even though I could personally carry in there if I choose to, and not be afoul of their policy, I won't darken their doorstep or spend a single penny with them ever again.

Their wings are small and taste like ass anway.
