Place the menu tree links at the top of the page at the bottom of the comments. The one that starts with : home>main category>off topic. That way you don't have to scroll back to the top to return to the main menu.

I'm happy with the current marketplace setup. I get questions pm'd to me so I don't have to keep on top of the thread and as a buyer I can just look through the marketplace posts of the past couple days to see which threads are being actively bumped etc. it feels like people get equal exposure for their ads this way.

I visit quite a few gun forums during the day. Bayoushooter is also the only one I visit that doesn't have the comments in the classifieds. Take that for what it's worth. Not that you want to be like AR15.com but they have insane amounts of traffic and comments are allowed. Also, I feel like the forum has slowed down a lot. It seems to have stopped but several months ago it seemed almost every post had a gang of guys be a dick to whoever posted. Regardless of their experience and I'm pretty sure it turned a lot of people sour. I don't think near as many have been banned as have gone away on their own. I'm a long time retail guy and it's not the customers that complain that worry you, it's the one that never say anything and will never return.

    Enjoy the form.
I still would like the firearms marketplace to be broken down
into sub sections. Pistols for sale, rifles for sale and shotguns for sale.
    Thanks.

    Comments in the classifieds....

I'd rather know somebody is an asshat from seeing their previous comments on other folks ads than find out for myself when I'm in the middle of a deal with them.

If the search function was supped up, it could solve just about any problems.

Let's just say you are looking for a particular gun to buy (a 1911 for instance), you enter it in a search box (1911's for sale), and viola! Every 1911 that anyone has for sale shows up. Now, this is based on the ad being defined a certain way. But that shouldn't be that difficult.

The search criteria could be tweaked to allow searches in chronological order of posting. Thus eliminating many bumps.

    Something like: Search: WTS > Pistols > 1911's >sort by date >enter!

Austin, you know that is a big task, but if you can pull it off it would make the market place really nice. And for those that want to comment on ads; make it a search criteria. In other words, if the seller wants to allow comments, then the search criteria could include: Ads that seller allows comments.

Separate sections for comments in classifieds and no comments in classifieds. I don't like the comments allowed. It has allowed some folks to beat up new folks adds and make personal comments not adding anything to the sale item. I have had lots of success in selling and purchasing with no comments allowed. I do recognize the need for some to get more information, but if we do our job as sellers we can provide fairly quality photos given cameras we use and lots of information about the item in the add. PM's have worked well for me. I am certainly open to the majority view and rule however. I do not believe the minority should rule here or other places as we see this going on in this country. Just my two cents. I like this place and the classifieds have served me well. I have learned a lot and met a lot of good folks and read some good posts here, but have witnessed lots of circuses as well. Thanks for the time Austin.

I don't use the marketplace, so I don't have a dog in the fight LOL.

OH! Fix the black/red theme up a bit- there's stuff like Jack that gets lost in the darkness and profile areas that are white text on white background. Maybe 3Dify (shadow) the moderator's names so they stand out (slightly) more.

No offense to be meant by this but why dont we talk to all of the mods on comments being allowed in the for sale section.

Would it even matter or would we all be wasting our time trying to talk to yall about the idea of allowing it again?

Again no offense meant I'll drop it from here on out just be straight with me and I wont bother mentioning it again.

My point of view on it is the same as Leonidas.

The bottom left corner of every post has a "report post" button. It is very easy to click and have a mod remove a post or shut a thread down by clicking and describing why you are reporting. Negative comments in ads should not happen. Just because something may not be worth $X to you doesn't mean that the seller thinks it isn't worth it. If you think the price is too high, move on. No interest in the sale will let the seller know that he has priced his item too high.
I have noticed a lot of "I'm new" threads lately. these newbs may not know all the gun slang or not know how to describe an item. Their description may be what they know and could learn a whole lot more from trying to answer questions. And if I know the answer, I might just be able to help the OP sell his item. With only PM communication, I'd never see the question.

Back in Mid-September I started a thread asking for suggestions for improvements to BayouShooter. The results and suggestions that we got were overwhelmingly positive. Out of the hundreds of submissions that we received via PM and on the public forum, I, with the help of the site staff, implemented over thirty suggestions for improvement publicly and dozens behind the scenes. Now it is time again to see about bringing in more ideas and tailoring this wonderful place more so around what YOU, the members, want.

In the first thread where I asked for suggestions, we did not allow people to debate the ideas or suggestions. In this thread, I encourage comments on other people's suggestions. Hopefully with a little debate and discussion we can get some awesome ideas out of everyone. If you would not like your idea to be posted publicly, please PM it to me and you will remain anonymous (and I will post the idea to be discussed). If you have any questions, please feel free to respond to this thread or to PM me.

I look forward to hearing from everyone!

    Thanks,

    Austin

Rule number one in discussion forums where I mod: Discuss the post, not the poster. Don't insult other members.

    Simple, and it works.

    Good luck.

if there is some way to allow the OP'er to delete all asshat responses and/or low-ball offers to the classifieds, I think it would be only beneficial to allow questions and comments. What was the reason for eliminating replies in the first place? Wasn't it to stop that type behavior?

The OP could click the "report post" button and have a mod delete

This is in the works already, I suggested this a few weeks ago, we are just looking at different ways of splitting it up, I'm looking forward to it :).

What do you mean? You're asking if the possibility of allowing comments in the classifieds is there or if this conversation is pointless?

I dont want to beat a dead horse by any means but since it was asked I'll respond.

I like the idea of having responses in the Classifieds section. I have found myself listing less and less items for sale since that ended, instead turning to other outlets to sell. I think I post pretty decent ads with good photos and information but I got tired of the PM's. Its easier (for me) to respond to the ad. I admit its a bit of laziness on my part. I could probably go in and edit the ad and be done with it but I just found that annoying and instead of bringing up the forbidden subject on the board I just listed elsewhere. And the "your price is too damn high" and "thats a sweet gun" never really bothered me as a seller or a buyer. I actually sold a few items faster when people who "great gun" bumped me. Just my $0.02.

Edit to add: What about having two classifieds for a set period of time. One that allows comments and one that does not. Give it, say, two or three months. See which classified section gets more ads put up. If the "no comments" classifieds get more then I'm pretty sure most people would shut up about it. :dunno:

Oh, and the seller then has to check his thread often to see is people have questions. PMs email you a notification and pop up on the board.

If the site is a commercial venture it seems to me you'd want to create as much traffic as possible. I for one know if I get an e-mail notification of a PM where another member has included a phone number, I'm not going to log on to see the same PM. However, if I'm selling something and comments are allowed, I have to get on the site to see what interest there is. Often times I'd see something else and spend more time on the site than even if I had just checked a PM.
