    Can anyone tell me the "address" of the state law that bans employers from prohibiting guns in employees' cars? I want to get a hard copy and see how my employer plans to reconcile their plans to search cars with the new law. I know it has to do with whether the parking lot is "publicly accessible" and if no parking area is publicly accessible they have to provide secure storage for the gun you can't store in your car.

    Thanks Barney. I wonder how many employers are going to want people walking up to their guard shacks with guns. Now, if they want me to use a locked case, that's fine. I'll pop the $40 for one of those metal boxes with a combination lock and a "leash" to attach it to the car.

    I sprung for the lock box and use a wire bike lock to strap the box under the seat. That way its out of sight, within the rules, and convenient.

    Doesn't look like they have the authority to do that. Danged if I'm giving them the serial numbers of my stuff! This one time that I am all about "concealed means concealed" having read Rs:32.292.1.

    Dang it, don't make me agree with HH. They are violating you rights. No one has to allow you to keep a gun in your car even on private property. That's crap.

    If the area where you park your car is inaccessible by locked fence, then yes, your employer can ban guns. However, if there is no fence around your car, then your car falls under the "extension of your home" paranoia, and therefore they cannot regulate what you keep in your car.

    I don't see a problem really. When I worked corrections that was a regular thing. Everyone coming to the prison had to drop their weapons off at the front gate. I don't ever remember any problems. I work in security now and still don't see a problem as long as the staff is properly trained on the policies.

    You appear to be correct however there are restrictions and exceptions...

    Here is the law:
    La. R.S. 32.292.1 said:
    M. Weapons In The Workplace, La. R.S. 32.292.1
    Employers may restrict an employee’s possession, use or sale of weapons, firearms or explosives on work premises, while operating company machinery, equipment or vehicles for work-related purposes, or while engaged in company business off premises. An employee who lawfully possesses a firearm may transport or store such firearm in a locked, privately-owned motor vehicle in any parking lot, parking garage, or other designated parking area.

    This law does not prohibit an employer or business entity from adopting policies specifying that firearms stored in locked, privately-owned motor vehicles on property controlled by the Company be hidden from plain view or within a locked case or container within the vehicle.

    No property owner, tenant, public or private employer, or business entity or their agent or employee may be liable in any civil action for damages resulting from or arising out of an occurrence involving a firearm transported or stored in a manner consistent with this statute.

    This law does not apply to:
    1) any property where the possession of firearms is prohibited under state or federal law;
    2) any vehicle owned or leased by a public or private employer and used by an employee in the course of his employment, except for those employees who are required to transport or store a firearm in the official discharge of their duties;
    3) any vehicle on property controlled by a public or private employer if access is restricted or limited through the use of a fence, gate, security station, signage, or other means of restricting or limiting general public access onto the parking area, and when one of the following conditions applies:
    (a) the employer provides facilities for the temporary storage of unloaded firearms; or
    (b) the employer provides an alternative parking area reasonably close to the main parking area in which employees and other persons may transport or store firearms in locked, privately-owned motor vehicles.

    I dunno. I got it out of an "NRA National Rifleman" magazine.

    I did it for you. I still don't see where they have the right or where you would have to give them the info they are requiring. HOWEVER, this is still and "at will state" I believe and they can fire you because they want to and that is all the reason they need so rocking the boat may be ill advised.
