I still have the basic round plastic handguards on my upper. These should be removable without removing the upper sight base, correct? It should be a matter of pulling back and they seperate, right?

Thanks, that explains a lot. I haven't received my lower receiver yet. I've had a rock river on order for 2 months. I found out yesterday its back ordered for 7 more months :( I told them to get me a DPMS asap, as I'm ready to be shooting.
Anyway, I didn't want to put any pressure on the back of the upper receiver...

Are you having trouble getting the delta ring down or just separating the 2 hand guard halves?

Having a second pair of hands is good.
WECSOG - Using water pump pliers - put the handles over the ring & it is easier to do by yourself.
You can buy or make a tool that hooks in the magwell & levers down on the ring.

You can push on the back of the upper - no need to bang on it though.

I can't compress the delta ring spring. Like I said, I'd have to put the back of the upper on the ground or table and push against it. I'll just wait until my lower comes in (about 2 weeks).
