How's the fit on those FN's? I haven't found much they make I don't care for.
There's no such thing as a "First AR"... you'd be better asking for an inexpensive AR. You're not buying a Hi-Point (Though there are some models....hmm.) as opposed to a Glock.
In my honest opinion, Colt is the original and probably a great start... the S&W M&P-15 MOA edition is another (Pre-outfitted with Magpul furniture)... however, when you get into the higher-end "name brands", the costs rise quite rapidly.
Here is the thing, once you purchase it... it's all over. Your AR will NOT remain in that condition for long. You will be infected by BRD or Black Rifle Disease. Modifications, add-ons, furniture, etc... the money will flow. You'll be looking at items in the LGS like a crack head looks at a bag of rock.
Too bad Cold Stone Creamery doesn't make an AR platform... because I would have pre-modded rifles with only three levels of purchase... Like it, Love it, and GOTTA HAVE IT!
Is is a common misconception that Colt made the AR. Actually Armalite made the first AR and then sold it to Colt (Armalite Rifle 15=AR15).
Doesn't everyone love wikipedia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15
