Received an email from ExxonMobil today. To comply with the new law (Act 684) they are setting up a gun storage locker for contractors (and, I assume, setting up a separate one for Exxon "direct hire" employees).

Contract employee must submit a Firearm Registration Form that lists any gun(s) that might be brought to work. If approved, the worker will be given a "Gun Check ID Card."

Upon arriving at work, a contract employee must go straight to the storage trailer with an unloaded weapon, in a locked storage case (or in a soft case with a trigger lock) and place the cased weapon in a keyed (lockable) storage locker. At no time will Exxon security personnel touch the weapons.

After storing the weapon the employee will attach his "Gun Check ID Card" to the locker and drive to his normal parking lot.

When leaving work the contract employee returns to the storage facility and retrieves his firearm(s).

My Opinion: This is OK. It's not as good as just leaving your loaded weapon in a locked vehicle. But it's better than what we had prior to the new law.

I agree. It makes it inconvenient to bring your gun to work, but at least it is now legally possible. This is good news for the rest of us who work in plants because Exxon is known to have some of the most strict policies regarding firearms and contraband.

I agree with it being OK. I do like the fact that Exxon is working with the law here. I view having to store it somewhere other than the vehicle as a minor inconvenience. It becomes a major inconvenience, say, when the wife goes into labor, and you're rushing to get to the hospital.

The other question that would arise is: Do they take full responsibility as to what happens to/with that weapon while it is in their custody?

    able to carry knives?

Most people in plants carry knives, not for self defense, but for actual cutting of materials. You might get into trouble if you brought a butterfly knife in, but as far as I know there is no procedure saying which types of knives are legal or not allowed at my site. Some plants outlaw any knives that come to a "point" which makes you have to get one of these strange looking knives.

LOL come to think of it the Mexicans that I see who do insulation work typically "make" their own cutting tools. It is not uncommon to see a broken off reciprocating saw blade with duct tape for a handle being used to cut insulation. I've also seen large screwdrivers sharpened to a razor sharp edge that is used for gasket scraping. I tell you its like a prison in there some times.

cuts a throat or femoral artery just fine.

just making sure that you weren't defenseless.

Oh spare me Colin. We have top notch security guards keeping us safe at all times. Why should we need to defend ourselves against bodily harm from others?

I guess if you call a 260lb middle school educated, black mother of 6 who makes $8.00 hr. a guard then we should all rest assured that our plants will be safe from terrorism and acts of violence within the gates. :o

My plant told us that the law does not apply to it because of an OSHA reg for a safe working enviroment.

    Also some homeland security BS.
Nobody parks inside the plant's gate. Everyone parks in a lot that is accessible to the public.

    I don't think H.R. is correct.

I think that's why they park there.

Craig your HR is lying and someone filing charges would likely get that fixed, but they'd probably have to find a new place to work or would have an accident. :o

    I agree.

FWIW, there has been a no gun policy forever, but there are a lot of hunters that work there (including HR). They should know that during hunting season when you see ATVs in trucks and on trailers that you would probably find a gun in the vehicle. I don't think they searched anyone yet.

    Oh that's just great.

    Exxon/Mobile head clueless PR guy:

"OK GUYS LISTEN UP. We are going to set up a little booth for you to put your gun in to 'lock box' up outside of work. We are also going to ask you to fill out information about the type of weapon it is so we can know what you have. We then want you to make a card and leave that card on the outside of the locker, so we can know what type of gun is in there."

Work now knows one of the guns you have. Personally, I don't want anyone I work for or with (personal friends are different) to know what kind of guns/rifles I own.

Also, when the wolves come looking for your guns, they will not have to search from vehicle to vehicle...they will know exactly where they will all be...oh...and they will know who you are, because they have your ID on the outside so it will be easier for them to look you up your information, scope out your crib & then get the rest of your guns & home items while you are away from the house. Of course, they may just have a number on the ID badge, but still people pretty much leave work about the same time. They can always follow you home, cause they will see you leaving the booth, heading to your vehicle. Look for the "easy targets" maybe some younger kid in a first home trailer or older individuals with the family grown and gone, someone living outside of town or one with minimal neighbors & well...you get the idea. The "company policy abiding individuals" can still suffer with this. Gun safe in car, bolted to the frame locked is the safest in my book & the only way that I feel comfortable.

Call me full of bull but MAN F@(% THAT!

Can you tell us what plant this is ?

Are they banning firearms for visitors who park in the accessible-to-the-public lot ?

Uh, I think there's a sale on tin foil at Albertson's. AND it's tax-free Friday & Saturday, so stock up.

I prefer copper, lead, sulfur, potassium nitrate and charcoal. ;)

Look, I am just saying they ARE doing the best they can and attempting to find a happy medium for both parties involved, however, gun control is gun control. Let us properly lock our "away from home protection" safely in our vehicles. Don't call attention to us by making us jump through hoops. Responsible gun owners will lock away & keep our guns out of site...those that don't will have to deal with the consequences.

I guess if someone has a problem with it, they can always find another job. Meh?

I'd rather not. Like I said, the HR guy is a big hunter and he might stumble upon this site.....

There is a sign when you turn off the road:
    No cameras
    No explosives
    No guns
    No blah, blah, blah
By coming in here you agree to a search......

But we get traffic from a neighboring plant coming through there as well. Along with the FedEx guy, UPS, vendors, etc...
If someone was going to pick me up at work they could just drive into our parking lot and wait. The lot is only secured by cameras and is nowhere near the processing areas.
