I didn't take the time to read all of the post, so if someone has covered this I apologize.

I was have huge fuel bills each month with an SUV and A full size p/u pulling a boat. I decided to buy my wife a new car for her birthday and it would be something economical to drive. I bought a VW Jetta diesel (TDI) on 10-8-12. We couldn't be happier. I'm 6'2'' and 245 lbs and have plenty of room in the front or rear. The car gets unbelievable mileage. Overall average is 43 + and that is with a lot of town driving with the CHRISTmas traffic.

A trip to Birmingham, AL and back to Head of Island then to Abita Springs averaged a hair over 51 mph. Understand that we are traveling at posted speed limits and don't do the fast starts of and aggressive driver.

VW is the only vehicle that beats it EPA estimates of 31 city 35 combined and 43 highway.

It may not be for everyone, but I am tickled. Fuel is not going to get any cheaper with the current administration.

Has anyone ever gotten worse mpg when you tried premium in a car that just requires regular? In other vehicles I usually got better mileage but I noticed my mpg was worse in my '12 Explorer (4cyl ecoboost) and I don't think my driving habits were any different.

Try mid grade, some cars knock sensor and ping are set up for low grade fuel, and the higher octane is ignitin before the piston is at the top of it stroke.

premium has more chemicals in it that prevent preignition. It's less volatile and contains less energy per gallon.

Had a 2007 Mazda 6 4 cyl and got around 26 in the city, 32 on the hwy, both with fairly aggressive driving.

Now I have a 2003 Ford Explorer and get around 15 in the city, 19 on the hwy...and I've slowed my driving down ALOT.

I will be getting a jeep wrangler as soon as I graduate and make some $$$ though. Not looking forward to the gas mileage though. Hopefully they will put a diesel powered wrangler out in the next few years.

This is about what I get in my 96 Mazda 626 with about 172,000 miles on it. It's a V6 with a manual transmission. Still has the original clutch, so you can guess how I drive it. By the way back in 1999 it did 134 mph between N.O. and Austin. The car didn't come NEAR the red line. The lane separation bumps sounded like a helicopter. Made the trip in 4.5 hours. It's 550 miles. My mileage was somewhat different on that trip.

I won't be doing that again. I just put $1040 worth of repairs into the car. It's the first time I've paid for repairs since 11/2011. Best goddamned car I've ever owned.

You averaged over 122 MPH for 4.5 hours?
