Scott is saying it is a separate, slightly related story to Alien that takes place in the same fictional universe. However, it supposedly not a direct prequel. It's supposedly does not feature the titular Alien.

Then again, it has Weyland Industries, androids,the horseshoe shaped alien ship with a space jockey, huge chamber with egg like objects like Alien, and some thing burning through the face plate of somebody's space suit with what looks like acid.

Honestly, with out seeing the movie I want to say Scott is full of crap and call it a prequel.
