I know ever since I wanted to join reserves for quite a while but the lack of respect (which is two fold I can understand from a full time officer it is fact that reserves are essentially only in it when convinient) is why I didn't do it. I may look into it again for sure!

respect is earned. Proving yourself is part of the job, and if your skin isnt thick enough for the crust you certainly won't want the sandwich. It's certainly not for everyone, and if they feel that way I generally recommend firefighting or EMS as viable alternatives to contribute to your community.

I have perhaps a pointed question, which i know I may need to just ask NOPD.

I know NOPDs IT systems ( and IT folks) are in dire need of some help. I work a senior level job for a Hardware manufacturer. I have little interest in carry a badge or fighting through crowds. I do have an interest to help officer's jobs go smoother and ensuring that they have the right info & tools from a technology perspective to do their jobs. The job I do enables me to have free time to help. I have no interest in quitting my job, but I would like to help. I know the city can't afford top of the industry to get them where they would like to be.

For those at NOPD or part of reserves, does NOPD have any sort of program to help in this sort of manner? I'm already doing something similar in JP, but I'd like to help the PD in the parish that I actually live in.

Contact Officer Nicole McCaskill at nmmccaskill@nola.gov. She is in charge of the VoCaL(Volunteers Can Lead) program. It is a program that allows citizens to volunteer in support roles at District Stations.

well, i appreciate all the info and advise. i'm sure i will enjoy the reserves (i have always wanted to get into law enforcement) and hopefully my wife will get on board of letting me do it full time if we can afford the pay cut. the academy i will be going to is monday, tuesday, and thursdays and every other saturday for 6 months. i have to put in a minimum of 16 hours a month which i'm sure i will put in more than that.

When I was younger, no. But work in the plants long enough and mature a bit and skin thickens. I understand earning respect. Putting up with pre determined attitudes well, I pick and choose my battles. I could serve plenty other ways much other than ems etc. Things are different now no doubt so something worth looking into for sure. Atleast to me it is.

to be clear- I'm not saying "firefighting or ems" as some derogatory or condescending substitution. They have incredibly challenging duties as well, just in different perspectives. I sincerely meant that if you can't/won't put up with some of the aspects of being an officer, that those guys need help too- and are often responding to the same calls. When/If my wife says "no more", I'd switch to either in a heartbeat.
