Verti Mart on Royal (1100 block, i believe)

Its carryout only. I've been known to drive over from Slidell just to get their lasagne (or meatloaf) and then stake out a bench in Jackson Square to eat. D@mned good Poboys, too.

The Pitt/Jolie family get carryout from them.

+1 for Ralph's on the Park!
a martini at the Melange at the Ritz Carlton on Canal is always a nice way to start the night! I generally try to stay away from Bourbon if I can. Decatur has some nice quiet bars and a fun walk down to Frenchman for some good live music. My favorite brunch is at The old Coffeepot on St. Peters (not South Peters). Just don't sass the waitresses.

Cool things to do? Eat and drink and drink.

Where you do the former depends on the crowd, food and expense you want to deal with.

Where you do the latter depends on the atmosphere you're looking for-- and never, ever Bourbon unless you're going somewhere very specific.

Some details of what you prefer could lead to better recommendations. ;)

    ^ What that guy wrote.

Check out Oceana. I went there back in April when the wife and I brought the little one to the aquarium for her bday, and it was very good.

However, I did NOT know that the restaurant was actually on Kitchen Nightmares a while back, and I watched that episode recently and was a bit traumatized to know that it USED to be like that when it is now awesome.

Because the beigenets suck at cafe du mond.
The zoo, aquarium, and insectarium, are all good. You can get all 3 for $35/person.
There's a great hoc art track on I10 just west of neworeans.
Ride the trolly around for cheap.

I agree with a lot of the suggestion above, and here are some of my favorites. Some may be duplicates from above

    Camellia Grill
Ye Olde College Inn - Seriously one of my favorites in the city. You should also check out Rock & Bowl which is right next door and has live music just about every night. Both owned by the same guy.
Brocato's - for cannoli's. I love the chocolate covered canoli!
Katie's - Amazing food & bbq. featured on food network lots of times
    Mother's
    Parkway Bakery
    Mandina's
    Liuzza's
The Rum House - another one of my favorites - located on magazine st.
    Sushi Brothers
    Palace Cafe
Have lunch happy hour at the DDay Museum - the sliders are so good, and so cheap during happy hour.
Crescent City Brewery - On Decatur I think. Across from JAX.
    Nonna Mia
    Port o' Call
Yeah, I like to eat... haha

    As for fun things:
Go hang out at the fly if the weather is nice. This is the area behind the zoo. You may need a local to point you in the right direction.
Insectarium/Aquarium/Zoo - I have been multiple times and love going back.
Nola brewery and one of the rum distilleries here offer daily tours.
Check out Frenchman Street - Lots of eclectic bars/retaurants/shops/music/etc.
You can rent paddle boats in City Park.
check out http://www.wwoz.org/new-orleans-community/music-calendar to find live music around the city.

I have probably forgot more than I have have remembered but this should easily get you through a few days! Good luck, and if you have questions about any place in particular, just ask

    Westbank N.O.
Another addition to a good list

    Pascal's Manale - 504-895-4877
    1838 Napoleon Ave

A bit old school N.O. - the owner is a good guy. He has supported gun & hunting causes for some years.

I tried Camelia Grill not long ago. I was not impressed. It wasn't bad, but no better than Dot's Diner.

    Brocato's cannot be missed!

If you get to N.O. early Central Grocery makes the best muffelata in the city. You have to get there early or they run out of bread.

For a nice meal at a really good restaurant try:

    Coquette New Orleans
    2800 Magazine St.
    New Orleans, Louisiana 70115

    11:30 am - 3:00 pm, 5:30 pm - 10:00 pm.
    (504) 265-0421
    http://www.coquette-nola.com

If you or you dining partner likes bacon and bourbon try the Jackson. Bacon infused bourbon cocktail.
