Not sure the model #, but the Safariland ALS witht he paddle and belt slide attachment is only 45.00. Like that it is only Level II, but it is solid. that is what I use for my Beretta PX4. You can also get it with the hood and the hood cover if you want for max protection---that is what we carry for duty.

    Very solid holsters.

Ever look at the Blackhawk serpas? I'm not sure how good they are just happened to be looking on their sight when I read this thread.

I wish I could. I have the Serpa Carbon Fiber Level II and wish I could get the level III but as far as I know they do not make the Level III for XD's.

Please tell me what is so bad about the Serpa's? NOT just that they are Diablo! BUT real facts, I am interested because I have one and would like facts.
    Many Thanks!

Well, I do not like them because they require you to provide positive pressure with your trigger finger. In a high speed, high stress situation, that trigger finger goes into the trigger guard. Even with dedicated training, the chances for a ND are high.

Also, some have expressed issues with the locking mechanism being locked closed, thus trapping the weapon in the holster requiring literally cutting the holster off.

Great range holster, but not ideal for Daily defensive carry.

    My too sense.

The concept of a serpa is novel but I would also recommend against them. I personally witnessed a certain someone ND with one while drawing an XD. If you drew every time exactly correct you may never have a problem but factor in high speed draws in a high stress violent encounter while you're moving and it's a recipe for an off target discharge.

    Outside Slidell
The serpa's retention button can be locked if you end-up on the ground and a pebble or small stick were to become lodged in the opening. The botton on the outside is just waiting for the BG to get to it, and the holster is generally flimsy.

The Safariland ALS paddle/belt slide combe is a much better holster at similar price of a Serpa. It has a padded interior and has a much more rigid shell, and the locking mechanism is between the pistol and the officer where no one else sees it.

    The Safariland #'s go like this;

6378- (tells the holster style - ALS Paddle)
    148- (tells the gun it fits - 148= 4" XD, 149=5"XD)
    411- (tells the finish and R/L side - 411 RH, 412 LH)
K15- (tells you that it is a kit w/belt attachment for 1.5" belt)

I would highly recommend the 6360 or 6365 ALS duty holster for a uniformed officer, and a 6378 for Detective/Plain Clothes officer.

I carry the ALS for duty and off duty. The 6378 off duty is great. The draw is natural to hit the release, and easy top defend.

    This^.

Of more concern is what Brannon mentioned; that "finger lock" that so many wax euphoric over is an ND looking for a place to happen. And it HAS happened.

I'll put it this way... if I was on the line with other shooters, and I saw a Serpa on one of them's belt, I'd get as far away from that individual as I could. The extra finger movement to ensure keeping it clear of the trigger, on that holster, has to be solidly programmed in. Not many folks have enough time on the holster for that.

    .
Yea but, but, that's just an internet rumor and/or that has never happened in real life and/or it has never happened to me and, as such, it is impossible.

just got my safariland raptor holster level III on ebay, lightly used, for $50. I can't give a whole lot of info as far as one holster over another I got that style b/c that is what the reserves dept sargent required us to get.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but does not everyone's finger slide along the outside of the holster upon draw?

I use the serpa lv II for a range gun, and have done drawn from it quite a bit. The Groove on the serpa is higher than the trigger well, not on the trigger well. I completely understand all three POV's but haven't seen any EXTRA ND's simply b/c of the holster.

Maybe it does take an ingrained training method for the muscle memory to keep your finger away from the trigger, but When I draw my finger follows the groove that is on the serpa, and then right on to the position above the trigger. This is why the groove is there to keep your finger off the trigger.

Upon further investigation :D I notice that when I do draw, the end of my index finger hits the button, but my finger does remain STRAIGHT with the middle part of my finger sliding across the groove. My finger CAN'T enter the trigger well when it is straight.

I'm hoping by now you guys KNOW :) That I'm not trying to simply kick against the grain here just for the sake of argument. I just am not experienceing any of the bad features that are tlaked about with Serpa's.

Now the retention of a Level II or lack there of is completley understood. I'm just not seeing them as an ND happy holster. No more than any other ND's that happen. I've never see you guys blame gear over the operator :p

Ok, I'll take my lashings now :D

I have a correction to make to post #20.

Looking through google image, ALL the serpa's I see DO NOT have a finger groove that leads the finger away from the trigger. This is very odd b/c I know MINE/XD Serpa does. Most of the one's I'm looking at with no groove, are the Glock Serpa's.

Here's what mine looks like; Note the Finger Groove.

Here's what most I see look like; :eek3:

    No groove.

That could very well be the difference between an ND and not.

Then again, Training Like a Beast could also help.
