I don't know why so many in conservative circles have such a knee-jerk reaction to any kind of initiative that seeks to better our relationship with the environment. Fossil fuel's negative impact on the ecosystem is a scientific fact, no matter what political ideology you subscribe to, and it's something that effects the well-being of every individual. You can't just sweep the problem under a rug and pretend that it doesn't exist.

And no I'm not tree hugging socialist, I'm a libertarian and very pro free market. And as such I think it's very important to respect the living environment of others. Multi-national corporations polluting the environments that countless people need and use is no different than some guy throwing toxic waste in your yard just because it's more convenient for him. It's a violation of individual rights.

While there's lots of political indoctrination going on in our schools to be rightfully concerned about, I don't see anything wrong with what the OP posted. It's nothing new, they had the same kind of stuff when I was in grade school. In fact I think it's great that schools are encouraging kids to consider alternative energy. They need to back this up with teaching sound economics and technology so maybe these kids can grow up to create free market solutions to the energy and pollution problems.

Exactly! Good point! There are many other "true" sciences that can be explored at this point. I'm not saying they can't produce electricity through wind or solar. I am saying that the schools are steering them away from facts about science to the "what ifs' of someone's personal ideology.

It has no place in "PUBLIC" schools. If you want to convince my kid he is doomed; wait till I send to college. At least there he may be able to disseminate the ******** for himself while I pay for it.

I agree. Elementary children are impressionable and learning how to think. Adults can cipher through the material and make up their own minds. It seems like educators with an agenda are trying to get our children to accept their views as fact. So they will accept this belief before they know better. Another good previous point is they leave out the negative environmental impact some alternative forms of energy generate. Factual debate is good. But Adults vs Children is hardly fair.

Science is against burning stuff for fuel.

Don't have a dog in this hunt, but to say science is against something is not right. Science is an application of things. Science does not cry if I burn a package of matches, it might simply tell me how much heat was created, and how much O2 was used, and how much of any other gases were created.

To say 'Science is against something' is to personalize it. And that is not the role of science.

Should we couch other scientific theories into feelings?

Is science against burning calories in humans?

If sharks were more efficient, would there be life in the oceans?

After a thorough examination of all commentary in this thread, I have come to conclude the following:

    "LOL"

Sir, I am not assured that science concurs with your evaluation. This may require a study and evaluation, to see if your "LOL" is scientific or not. :)

Wowzers. I go out with friends and come back and THIS is what happens? Well, I am not going to respond to everything, but one thing did stick out from in the thread that I wanted to address:

"But 2+2 always equals 4. True science!" - Emperor

If you agree that something so basic is "true science," then I encourage you to look at the science behind the combustion reactions of fossil fuels. You will see that much of the potential energy stored in the chemical bonds is wasted by simply lighting it on fire. Sure, it might work, but the byproducts created from all that goes into the process are quite harmful. The science behind said chemical reactions is almost as simple as 2+2. Go read up on it :)

As for other comments throughout. Sure, kids are being taught sides of social issues. That is kind of what school is for. I went to Catholic schools from Pre-K thru 12th grade. Just because we were indoctrinated with all that Catholic schools want to force onto everyone does not mean that we all believe their teachings or stick to them. It is up to parents to parent their kids and encourage them to view both sides of an issue and make their own informed opinion.

Gotta ask how much Fossil Fuel was used for you to go out?
How were your drinks kept cold, food cooked, what form of transportation did you use to and from the establishment and of course did you flush the toilet and wash your hands?

What point are you getting at?

That we use fossil fuels mostly, now? That is not something anyone here contested. The whole discussion is based upon everyone knowing this.

I'm trying to learn what people are doing to reduce the use of fossil fuels on a local level. Is something wrong with asking questions? Austin may drive a battery powered car for all I know.

    Gotcha.

Right now, fossil fuels works best for most things, but it's the desire to pursue better that I always try to encourage. Always better. Not just energy production, but in all things.

I think most every American can identify with reducing energy consumption. It's easy because we buy energy and most people can easily identify with reducing costs in your budget! Homeowners especially. Car pooling is not nearly as common in 'merica as elsewhere and our public transit sucks outside of a few cities, but I think the fact that people often shop a vehicle with the better fuel efficiency shows initiative. It may be motivated by cost, but the effect is similar.

The principles that help reduce energy consumption are the same that go with "do less harm" in general, as well as the "leave the area as good as you found it, or better" that every boy scout should have learned. Reduce, reuse, recycle. My recycling has gone to **** without convenient curbside pickup, I'll admit. I focus mostly on reduce and reuse.

Being less of a society that treats things as "throwaways" and gets back to fixing broken **** instead of replacing it would be a giant step. I used to be quick to say "**** it, I'll buy a new one" but now I try to extend the life of major items and put more care into fixing them. I purchase products that are more easily maintained, and easily fixed if broken, when possible.

I am not a tre hugger and I don't drive a battery car. I am not a big proponent of the green initiative in everyday life, though it is a good idea.I recycle most that can be recycled and I do not litter. I am making the argument against burning fossil fuels from a logical and scientific standpoint.

    I understand.

I find myself telling the wife and kids to turn off the lights at bedtime to help save but then I go start my truck a 1/2hr before I leave for work so it's warm lol.

As "The Ultimate Consumer" I am using whatever makes my life easier. I don't have to worry about how much I pay for it. I've paid my dues to be able to do that. As for the future, I don't care what happens to this planet after I am dead! You guys can worry about that! It always seems to work itself out of problems, anyway. Besides, when it has had enough you it will purge itself, again. In case you haven't heard it's billion of years old!

There is a recycling bin in my garage that has a few plastic water bottles in it; but if I am drinking a bottled water ( and its a good one too), and the last sip comes as I am more then tossing distance from the recycling bin, I throw it in the garbage can. I am not going to take one step backward to recycle anything.

I have already warned my kids, they will have to work this crap out for themselves. Saps in America can suffer alone; make China, Russia, and India, stop their ******** first, then I will jump on board. Other than that, I don't care. I will not!

The discovery if the largest oil reserve in the world in Australia is music to my ears. I can't wait to burn that.

Now, don't get me wrong; I don't litter, and I don't impose my comfort on ANYONE else. You guys have about 30 years to change it before I figure I am done, so get after it! When my light switch goes off, I will be DEAD! Enjoy!

But the real question is what do you do with your cigarette butts when you're in the truck?
