Yeah, um, so, radar detectors. I'm glad to see the consensus is still the Valentine.

Call in and request a 30-day returned unit which they sell at a 10% discount ($359 vs $399 shipped). Some say they're actually better than new since Valentine gives them a thorough check and calibration and will replace any worn parts to new shape. I just bought a second one and this is the route I took so I could justify spending the money on another.

Limiting X-band makes them a lot quieter since the majority of police radar is Ka and K band. X band is usually a door opener at the winn dixie. Most people who complain about the noisiness of their Valentine have not utilized the programming.

The other units a-la escort or beltronics (same company I believe) are good units as well, but they are built a little more cheaply IMO (even if they cost the same or more) and may or may not perform as well (the cheap one's just flat don't). Plus none of them have the dual antenna directional arrows which are, again IMO, essential. Some of the newer stuff offers features but to me it's a little gimmicky and too much of a hassle. To each his own.

Remove X-band, turnoff PoP, and turn ON K Guard.
That will make the V1 very quiet without hurting its effectiveness at all, in my experience.

Does the machine "do it for you", or do you just look up, see the number, and that's all that matters? I only have experience with the K15, and no LE training with it.

Depends on the unit but just because its not locked in at a certain speed it does t mean you cannt get a ticket for that speed.

If they don't yet they really need to make a radar gun that measures distance between two cars.

As an insurance agent I've read quite a few accident reports over the years. I can count on one hand the number of accidents that listed a cause or even a contributing factor as speed. Following too close comes up in quite a few. I know the argument about officers not witnessing the speeding butits not the velocity that caused the accident, its the inability to stop in time. Speeding tickets cause people to slow down for a certain amount of time after getting one (go read up on public executions if you don't understand what I mean). It also causes people to slow down where they are likely to encounter an officer, not where they are most at risk of getting into an accident, which is what this is supposed to be about (if it were only about revenue then start inspecting mattresses for tags, garage sales without permits, etc). Teach people to allow enough space behind the car in front, that will reduce accidents. Not to mention out insurance rates!

yeah, I understand you don't have some wierd right to demand to see it. I've only had an officer lie once in the 3 speeding tickets I've gotten, the last almost 4 years ago...and I thanked him for it. I was just curious how the machine worked, being as mine locked.

The handhelds we use lock as soon as the trigger is released. The ones mounted in units usually require the operator to manually lock them.

So now I know who to contact when I want to use the State Police track, eh? I wouldn't mind practicing a bit to demonstrate my professional skills as an operator driver to the throngs of mall parking warriors who will be attending....

I thought I was the only one who's seen, "I'm the T-Rex!" And "stuntcock!"

Surely I have no idea what you are talking about. Here at Vermiform Tactical, we take "Defensive Vehicle Driving & Assault" seriously. Frankly D.V.D.A. is hard work. The bulk of the seminar is logistics, but there are some theatrics involved too. For D.V.D.A. I have had to employ 4 professional "Drivers" that obviously have to have some acting ability as well. Right now my biggest hurdle is finding a host. Our D.V.D.A. sessions have all been hosted by females because traditionally they are at the center of our curriculum. Morality is a huge problem. Due to the extreme and unorthodox nature of D.V.D.A. it has become increasingly more difficult to secure a host that doesn't have loose morals. It is understandable though because reputations are at stake and a host could easily incur extreme property damage if amateur drivers were employed. Our last host had her reputation questioned after one of our Advanced Tactical Maneuvering seminars. Apparently some of our competition thought A.T.M. was too unorthodox and implied that our host had bad taste.
